1. What would the vision for a Future Earth interface/node in
Asia-Pacific be? (1/2)
• Need to understand current landscape and build on existing networks
before designing a new entity
• The regional mechanism should focus on 3 core activities:
1. Networking,
2. Coordinating
3. Building capacity in the region
It should provide effective links between the national and
global levels
1. What would the vision for a Future Earth interface/node in
Asia-Pacific be? (2/2)
Key activities could include:
1) Networking among scientists and with stakeholders (policymakers, businesses)
2) Define priority areas for research and policy communication
3) Development of education curricula
4) Management of collaborative projects
5) Training of policy makers, educators, etc.
6) Identify solutions (technological, policy, etc.)
These activities should be anchored in current research institutions
and networks with one lead institution. These anchoring bodies would
liaise with national committees (funding, national policies, etc)
2. What should the regional interface/node of Future Earth
look like?
• Broad-based
• Should look at existing governance models
• GEOSS
• NEESPI
• Others?
= need workshops to identify and assess current mechanisms
3. Who should be engaged?
• Be inclusive to engage relevant stakeholders (researchers, funders,
policy-makers, national committees, businesses) within 2 core
activities identified:
• Capacity building
• Projects
4. Where do we start? Who is ”we”?
• Workshop for Asia-Pacific region including the observation networks
(including physical and socio-economic perspectives) to map out who
the actors are and how current structures can be used for designing a
Future Earth regional interface
• « We » should include national committees, funders, researchers and
research networks
5. What are the next steps?
• Conduct a series of scoping workshops for the region to identify
current activities and come up with a model for the region
• Identify what is currently done: is it successful? Are there any
gaps?
• Define priority research areas and desired outcomes for the
region
6. How would we fund it?
• Need multiple opportunistic strategy, reaching out to different sources
including businesses
• Need also to look for long-term funding (and not be limited to ad-hoc
funding)
• National funders should be involved to support this series of
workshops
• International and regional funders have also an important role to play
