Self – Giving and Level Descriptors

Level 4: Show understanding of how

religious belief shapes life Pupils will be able to show understanding of the connection between the observance of Lent / Easter and Christian living

Show understanding of how religious belief shapes life

Why

is being a Christian about self-giving?

because

Jesus taught us that ‘loving one another’ (Jn 13: 34) is done through our self – giving (putting others first) = the foot washing Jn 13: 4-9, 12-15. The best e.g. of this = This is

why

we:

Jesus’ death on the cross forgive

– Jesus forgave the thief Lk 23: 39-43 and forgives us Lk 22: 19-20; Mt 26: 28 This is why we:

help those in need

– Jesus did this, ‘feedings’, ‘healings’ and in connection to Mt 25: 31-40 Jesus dies

hungry

,

thirsty

,

a stranger

, without

clothes

, a

prisoner

.

So by giving to others we give to Jesus.

BEATITUDES: identification of these in life of Jesus and Christian

Show understanding of how religious belief shapes life.

Research a person whose life gave new life to others : - Maximilian Kolbe - Oscar Romero - Mother Teresa How did they live out their religious beliefs?

- Jesus???

How did he live out his religious beliefs?

(Choose specific events, stories e.g. his Temptations, his struggle in Gethsemane, his reciting of Psalm 22 at the moment of his death) Why was he killed?

Strand (i): beliefs, teachings and sources Level 4: Describe and show understanding of religious sources, beliefs, ideas, feelings and experiences; making links between them

Compare and contrast the Suffering Servant Song in Isaiah 52: 13 – 53: 6 with the Death of Jesus Select Stations of the Cross: condemnation, a fall of Jesus, Simon, Veronica, Jesus meets his mother, death of Jesus - choose a character reflect on possible thoughts of them:- their motivation, reasons, loss, gain, feelings etc Produce art work on Stations

Level 5: Identify similarities and differences between peoples’ responses to social and moral issues because of their beliefs Pupils will be able to identify similarities and differences in peoples’ response to poverty in the world Different reasons why poverty exists Differing attitudes to the poor (Parable of Rich Man and Lazarus) Response to poverty: (Parable of Sheep and Goats

Identify similarities and differences between peoples’ responses to social and moral issues because of their beliefs The response of Pilate / Judas / Peter to Jesus during the last week of his life: What was their view of Jesus – before Holy Week.

What was their view of Jesus – during Holy Week – on what was this based?

What changed? – on what was this based?

Why?
