Recycling 101 & Outreach Resources Public Education Campaign A Presentation for Community POWER Grantees October 3, 2011 How to Teach Recycling • Rules about recycling can be complex and difficult to teach • This presentation is an example of how county staff teach others about recycling • This presentation template is a resource that you can use too Curbside Recycling 101 What can I recycle? • • • • Paper Cans Glass Plastic bottles Recycling 101 What can I recycle? PAPER: • Mail, office and school papers • Magazines and catalogs • Newspapers and inserts • Phone books • Shredded paper in closed paper bags • Cardboard boxes • Cereal boxes, cracker boxes, pasta boxes, cake mix boxes • Shoe boxes, gift boxes & electronics boxes • Boxes from toothpaste, medications and other toiletries Recycling 101 PAPER: Confused about the boxes? Here’s a tip: • If the box goes in the cupboard, it’s recyclable. • If it goes in the fridge, freezer, or microwave, it’s not! Recycling 101 What can I recycle? Cans: RECYCLE Metal food and beverage cans DON’T RECYCLE •Paint cans •Aerosol cans •Containers that held hazardous products, like paint thinner and automotive fluids Recycling 101 What can I recycle? RECYCLE Glass Food and beverage bottles and jars DON’T RECYCLE • Drinking glasses, mugs, dishes, cookware, pottery, vases, etc. • Window and mirror glass • Containers that held hazardous products, like nail polish and hobby paints. RECYCLE Plastic bottles & jugs •Water, soda, and juice bottles •Milk and juice jugs •Ketchup and salad dressing bottles •Dishwashing bottles and detergent jugs •Shampoo, soap, and lotion bottles DON’T RECYCLE •Tubs from margarine, cottage cheese, cream cheese, etc. •Yogurt, pudding, and fruit cups •Microwaveable food trays •Produce, deli and take out containers •Plastic wrap and bags* •Toys •Containers that held hazardous products, like motor oil. *Plastic shopping bags are recyclable at many local grocery stores. Recycling 101 What can I recycle? But what about those recycling symbols on the bottom of yogurt containers? This only indicates what type of resin the packaging is, not whether it’s recyclable. Here’s the slogan to remember: Plastic bottles or will do Recycling 101 How should I sort it? This depends on your city or the hauler you’ve selected • Single sort - Everything goes together in one bin • Two sort - Containers together – plastic, cans, glass - All paper together • Multi-sort - Each material is collected separately Resources to Help Promote Recycling • RethinkRecycling.com, a public education program of the Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board of the six county metro area • Before promoting recycling please check with your city recycling coordinator or your county contact.
