● What are some of the differences
between poetry and rap?
Gangsta’s Paradise
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there's nothin' left
Cause I've been blasting and laughing so long,
That even my mama thinks that my mind is gone
But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me, be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
You better watch how you're talking and where you're walking
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip but I gotta loc
As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke, fool
I'm the kinda G the little homies wanna be like
On my knees in the night saying prayers in the streetlight
Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Lose Yourself
His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti
He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready to drop
bombs,
But he keeps on forgetting what he wrote down,
The whole crowd goes so loud
He opens his mouth, but the words won't come out
He's choking how, everybody's joking now
The clock's run out, time's up, over, blaow!
Snap back to reality, Oh there goes gravity
Oh, there goes Rabbit, he choked
He's so mad, but he won't give up that easy, no
He won't have it, he knows his whole back's to these ropes

What do you notice?
“Hope” is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
Egad! So improper!

Dickinson’s Life
●
● Increasingly reclusive later in life.
● Published fewer than a dozen poems out
of around 1,800
● Tried to get more published, but editor
Thomas Higginson said, “You haven’t
quite gotten it.”
Slant Rhyme or Near Rhyme
Definition:
words that come close to rhyming due to
similar sounds, but which don’t rhyme
perfectly.
●
● “Heart” is a slant rhyme of “dark”
○ Uses the same vowel sound.
● “bodies” is a slant rhyme of “Hades”
○ Second syllable rhymes, but not first
Time for application!
Your assignment is to rewrite the Emily Dickinson poem
Because I could Not Stop For Death in the style of your
assigned rapper.
● First, identify the essential elements of your rapper’s
style. What is it that makes them unique and
recognizable?
● Then, identify the mood and themes of the poem. You
must keep these the same in your rewrite.
