Safe Network is developing its
model of outreach at local level complemented
by national support
All existing Safe Network Champions have been
as Ambassadors. This role offers scope for a very
varied level of commitment: some Ambassadors
will focus on providing local signposting to Safe
Network’s website and resources. Others, in
addition to this, will be able to provide awareness
and briefing sessions to local frontline VCS
organisations using a wider range of Safe
Network resources and products.
The exact nature of delivery for these offers will
be developed in partnership with the Regional
Development Managers.

Aim
To enable trustees of registered charities
and directors of unincorporated groups,
mutuals and cooperatives to understand
and fulfill their safeguarding responsibilities
towards children and young people.

Objectives:
By the end of the workshop you will be able to;
• Demonstrate an awareness of the safeguarding issues
that could emerge in your organisation
• Describe key areas and best practice in terms of their
responsibilities to safeguard children and young people
involved with your organisation
• Identify resources to help you and your staff/volunteers
to safeguard children and young people
• Identify next steps for yourself and your organisation in
terms of meeting their safeguarding responsibilities.

 Likely to be personally challenging and more emotionally charged
 Involves analysis of past professional and personal experiences

 Often about physical, sexual, or neglect, but could also involve emotional
abuse including abuse of power
 Involves examination of emotional response as starting point for focussing
on professional responses

Trustees are ultimately responsible for
ensuring that those benefiting from or taking
part in their organisation's activities are not
harmed in any way.
Busy trustees have a lot to think about, so
arrangements for safeguarding children can
be easily overlooked.
Safe Network are here to support you.

 Almost one in five children today has experienced serious
physical abuse, sexual abuse or severe physical or emotional
neglect at some point in their lifetime.
 One in 10 children in the UK has been neglected.
 There were a total of 21,493 sexual offences against children
recorded by police in the UK in 2011/12.
 One in 14 children in the UK has been physically abused.
 Around one in five children in the UK has been exposed to
domestic violence. (1)
Research

14
 On average, every week in the UK, at least one child is killed
at the hands of another person.
 For every child placed on a child protection plan or the child
protection register, we estimate there are another eight
children who are suffering from abuse and neglect and not
getting the support they need.
 Deaf and disabled children are more than three times more
likely to be abused or neglected than non-disabled children.
