COPYRIGHT By: Camilo Marin In education, you will find that not only students copyright. Many teachers these days unintentionally abuse the copyright law. Definition of Copyright Infringement Unauthorized use of material with a copyright law Violates copyright owner’s rights Some ways teachers break copyright laws: Copying and Pasting things from the Internet onto worksheets Copying worksheets from a copyrighted book Watching Films Taping something from the T.V. to show the class Ways to prevent copyrighting: Give credit where credit is due If you use someone’s words you must quote it Follow guidelines when using videos in the classrooms Collaborate with co-workers to better understand copyright laws What could happen if I break a copyright law? Court order to stop producing item Confiscation of the items Pay the owner of the copyright any profits you received or could have received as well as attorney fees. How can I make my students aware of copyright laws? Teachers are continuously being role models for students. Therefore, teach them early on about how to avoid copyrighting. Give students guidelines for projects and papers that teach them how to quote and give credit to material they used. Ways students break copyright laws: Using material but not citing the source Using other people’s words and not quoting it Copying and pasting from the internet Guidelines for Students Use MLA or APA formats when citing work Always quote other people’s words When possible, the best thing to do is ask the owner for permission to use the work What is Fair Use? Fair use is a principle based on the understanding that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. Are there conditions for deciding fair use? The only way to find out whether the material borrowed follows the fair use law is by taking it to federal court. The Judge will look at these four factors: the purpose and character of your use the nature of the copyrighted work the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and the effect of the use upon the potential market
