
There are 3 types of complements:
Subject complements: predicate adjective and
predicate nominative.
Direct Objects
Indirect Objects
Subject Complements


They describe the subject (predicate adjective)
OR replace the subject (predicate nominative)
Use with a linking verb not an action verb.
Subject Complements

Predicate adjectives are an adjective in the
predicate that describes the subject.

Sally became angry when Josie wrecked the car.

‘Angry’ is a predicate adjective describing the
subject (Sally) and it is linked to Sally by a
linking verb.
Subject Complements

Predicate nominative is a noun in the predicate
that renames the subject.

Milo is a lawyer.

‘Lawyer’ is a predicate nominative (a noun) that
renames Milo. It is connected to Milo with a
linking verb.
Direct Object



A direct object does not describe or rename the
subject.
It follows an action verb, not a linking verb.
The direct object (DO) tells who or what
receives the action of the verb. It answers the
question “who?” or “what?” after the verb.
Direct Object (DO)

Direct Object (DO)

Not every sentence has a direct object.
Direct objects are not found in prepositional
phrases.

Indirect Object (IO)


Usually used together with direct object.
The indirect object tells who or what receives the direct
object.
My little sister sang me a song. [“Song” is the DO. My
little sister sang a song to whom? “me” is the IO.]
My friend Joe, who is in the army, sent his girlfriend a
letter last week. [Joe sent the letter to whom?
