An Overview

during China’s middle ages.
It is a blend of poetic literature, music, and
dramatic acting.
The Actors
The actors wear elaborate make up
and dress in very lavish robes.
They speak and sing to one another
and even directly to the audience;
treating the audience as another
stage member.
All movements are done according to
set traditions.
The Music
The bamboo flute is the main instrument
used to accompany the singing.
A lute and/or a fiddle are also sometimes
used.
A small drum and a wooden clapper set
the beat.
A gong and cymbals are struck for
moments of action or great emotion.
The Stage
The stage is bare except for a few
simple props.
A single chair may represent an
entire palace or temple.
The Script
The scripts are taken from classical
Chinese novels and stories which
have been adapted for singing,
dancing, and acting out in a dramatic
way.
The Story of “The Peony
Pavilion”
Based on a popular
story created
during the Song
