1. Identify opinions and facts ;
Three question types:
Argumentation 议论文 必须argue for or argue against ,
必须体现refute(批驳)
Typical questions look like;
题目中含有一个观点
例题1:Universities should accept equal numbers of male
and female students in every subject. To what extent do
you agree or disagree?
题目中含有两个观点
例题2:Some people think that parents should teach
children how to be good members of society. Others,
however, believe that school is the place to learn this.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Lesson1:Critical Thinking(TR)
• 2)Report  typical questions are about causes/reasons, effects/
problems, solution/measures
• 例题3:Studies suggest that children now spend more time on watching
television than in the past and less time on active and creative things.
What do you think this is the case|?
• What measures could be taken to increase children's creativity?
• 例题4:In today's world, people often throw away old things and then
buy new ones. However, the broken things were always repaired and
used again in the past.
• What are the reasons of this tendency? What problems will be brought
to society?
• 3) Pros and Cons 利弊题 --> 官方归入argumentation, 也必须argue,必须
refute
• 例题5:Some people tend to take temporary jobs, for they have time to
do other things they like to do.
• Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for them who
want to do so?
Lesson1:Critical Thinking(TR)
• 2. Make comparisons  find out differences, relationship or/and
similarities ;
• 1) Find out differences
• A. While some people link happiness to wealth and material success,
others think it lies in emotions and loving personal relationships.
• B. Children develop faster socially when going to school at an early age.
They make friends and learn how to get on with other children of a
similar age. This is not possible at home because they are the only child,
or because their brothers and sisters are older or younger.
• 2)Find out relationship
• Technology can positively contribute to the keeping alive of traditional
skills and ways of life.
• Nature and nurture are not mutually exclusive. Outstanding musicians
and exceptional sports stars have probably succeeded because of both
good training and natural talent.
• 3) Find out similarities
• A foreign language is simply another language. As long as a person can
use their mother tongue well, it is not necessary to assume that learning
a foreign language requires extra linguistic talent.
Lesson1:Critical Thinking(TR)
