What is Sustainability?

“Nature always designs for life. Designers, however, must choose between designing for life or death. It takes vision to design for life, but we are already beginning to feel the pinch of life without vision” Chief Oren Lyons

What is Green Design?

Design and construction practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and occupants that address:

– – – – –

Sustainability Safeguarding water and water efficiency Energy efficiency Conservation of materials and resources Indoor environmental quality

Triple Bottom Line

Benefits of Green Design

Environmental benefits

Reduce impact to the environment

Economic benefits

Improve the bottom line

Health & safety benefits

Enhance occupant comfort

What is LEED-NC?

EAp1 Fundamental Systems Cx

   

CxA shall have documented commissioning authority experience in at least two building projects.

Individual serving as CxA shall be independent of the project’s design and construction management, though they may be employees of the firms providing those services. The CxA may be qualified employee or consultant of the Owner.

CxA shall report results, findings and recommendations directly to the Owner.

For projects smaller than 50,000 sq.ft., the CxA may include qualified persons on the design or construction teams who have the required experience.

EAp1 Fundamental Systems Cx

The commissioning process activities shall be completed for the following energy related systems at a minimum:

HVAC&R (mechanical & passive) and associated controls

– – –

Lighting and daylight controls Domestic hot water systems Renewable energy systems (wind, solar, etc.)

EAc3 Enhanced Commissioning

     

Prior to start of construction documents phase, designate an independent CxA Conduct a minimum of one Cx design review Review contractor submittals Develop Systems Manual Verify training requirements Review of building operations within 10 months after substantial completion
