The Learning Disability
Partnership Board
Meeting October 2011
Keeping Safe
in
Northamptonshire
1
• Today we are going to tell
you about the work that
the Keeping Safe group
has done over the last
year
Keeping Safe Plan
2
The Launch
• The card was officially
launched on: March 23rd 2011
at Northampton Football Club
• We also held another event on
24th March in Corby.
The Launch
• About 300 people came to the
events.
• Some people gave us some
really good ideas
• Lots of people also promised
to make things better for
people with learning
disabilities to feel safe
The Event
Keep Safe Card
• The keep safe card is for
anybody with a learning
disability who wants one.
• Each person decides what
information they want to
put on their card.
• The information will also go
on the Police Disability Line
Keep Safe Card
• So far, the police have sent
out 670 Keep Safe Cards.
• 49% of the police disability
line registered users have a
Keep Safe card. This is
almost half of the people.
The DVD
We made a DVD that shows
people with learning disabilities
how to use their card.
•
• The DVD also shows the Keep
Safe places what to do if someone
needs help.
• We have also put the training
tools on the DVD
Keep Safe Places
• The first Keep Safe places
are:
• Police Stations and
• Libraries
• Sweet Shop Kettering
• Safe places will have this
sign.
• We will have more safe
places during 2011
Keep Safe Places
Training
• There are some places that we
feel are not a safe place, like a
public house or
• Places where people live.
Keep Safe Places
• This years Partnership Board
plan says that we will have at
least 10 more Keep Safe
Places in Northamptonshire.
• We asked the Local groups to
help us with their ideas for
Keep Safe Places.
• We think we will have 10
new keep safe places by
March 2012.
Keep Safe Places
Training
• The Partnership Board plan says
that before anywhere can
become a keep safe place we will
make sure that people who work
there are trained.
•We have done this.
• Maisie and Richard have helped
deliver the training.
Keep Safe Places
Training
In October we will be having a
meeting to Train the Trainer.
This will train people in different
parts of the county to become
trainers for learning disability
awareness and keep safe.
They will then go and train the
new Keep Safe Places in their area.
Keep Safe Places
Training
We have written an agreement that
Keep Safe places need to sign
before becoming a Keep Safe Place.
We will also ask local Police
Community Support Officers about
possible new Keep Safe places.
We want to make sure they are all
safe.
Keep Safe Places
Secret Shoppers
• We will also have some
“secret shoppers”
• The secret shopper will make
sure the keep safe places are
showing their Keep Safe sign.
Keeping Safe
• The Board plan says that 500
more people with learning
disabilities and carers will know
about the Keep Safe cards and
Hate crime and how to report it.
• We think we have done this
because 670 people already have
a card.
16
Keeping Safe
• We will try to make sure more
people know about the card and
hate crime by:
• Holding events
• Getting information in the papers
and on the radio
• Putting information in different
newsletters and on websites.
School for Monsters
•The Board plan says that 500 more
young people will know about disability
hate crime and we will make a DVD.
•The DVD and lesson plan have been
made. The DVD is called School for
Monsters.
•We will take this to schools over the
next few months so we think we will do
what the Board asked us to
School for Monsters
• We will work with mainstream
and special schools to use the
DVD in lessons.
•
We will ask the schools to tell
us how the DVD has worked.
Complaints procedures
• The Board plan says that 3 more
public organisations like police,
councils and NHS will have easy read
complaints procedures and we will
know how people with learning
disabilities are treated when they use
these services.
• We will use “secret shoppers” to test
these services.
•We have not started work on this yet
but will do soon.
Charter of Rights
• The Board plan says that we will
have a charter of rights for
people with a learning disability in
Northamptonshire and all public
organisations will have said they
will stick to it.
• We have started looking at charters
that are used in other areas and we
have met to talk about one for
Northamptonshire. We think we will
have finished this by March 2012.
Next Year
Due to the position of the board and
funding we cannot plan for the year
2012.
