OASIS continuity project -1During the Term 4 CC Day, we reported that OASIS Servers would be replaced with
new Netware 6.5 servers
The situation has changed and this is now unlikely
ITD has decided to pursue a "Thin-Client" solution for OASIS, where both Admin and
Library would be run from a Terminal Server Farm at St Leonards
This would involve to transfer of every school's OASIS data to the data warehouse at
St Leonards and the removal of all OASIS servers
Access to each school's OASIS data would be via the DET Portal using Windows
2000 or XP clients with OASIS running as a DOS session in Windows.
Staff would sign onto the DET Portal and if they had rights to access OASIS, a link to
OASIS would be included on their portal.
If a school assistant or Librarian worked in more than one school, their DET Portal
would include links to OASIS for each site
Sydney Region
OASIS continuity project -2Some benefits of the new Thin-Client solution:
No more boot disks
No more old OASIS workstations
No more KVM switches needed with two computers
No more K2 Backups (K1s must still be run)
No more tape backups
No more OASIS Updates to install
No more dedicated OASIS printers - now any Windows printer will work
Switching between Word and OASIS is simple on the same PC - just minimise
We may be able to access OASIS from home via the Portal (yet to be clarified)
Sydney Region
OASIS continuity project -3Some considerations with the new Thin-Client Solution:
What do we do with all the old PCs that were hand-me-downs for
OASIS previously?
How do we access OASIS if the WAN (Internet) link is down?
What are the implications for 3rd-party systems that work with
OASIS?
Sentral (GProxy)
Swipe card attendance systems
Timetabling systems
Academic Reporting systems
SMS Systems
Custom school applications
Sydney Region
OASIS continuity project -4OASIS Thin-Client will be trialed in April in up to 20 schools in Sydney
Region
Following successful trial, all schools will be scheduled for conversion
Conversion is to be completed by November, 2006
A data collection process will be undertaken to determine the "old
hardware" issue
As a School Administration system, OASIS will be around for at least
three more years.

MS Student Select program
Microsoft has made available to DET its Student Select
program which allows students to purchase Microsoft
software (license and media) for their own use at home at
reduced prices. Microsoft has sent a letter to each school just
before the start of the 2005/2006 school holidays.

Requirement to install updates for future deployments of
select MS Office products.
It was recently decided in a court that certain portions of code found in Microsoft Office
Professional Edition 2003, Microsoft Office Access 2003, Microsoft Office XP
Professional and Microsoft Access 2002 infringe a third-party patent. As a result,
Microsoft must make available a revised version of these products with the allegedly
infringing code replaced.
Action required: Install Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (Office 2003 SP2) for all
your future deployments of Office Professional Edition 2003 and Office Access 2003,
Install the Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 Patch (Office XP SP3 Patch) for all your
future deployments of Office XP Professional and Access 2002
Action requested: To keep your current systems in alignment with your future
deployments of these products, Microsoft is requesting that you also update all your
current Office Professional Edition 2003 and Office Access 2003 installations with Office
2003 SP2, and Office XP Professional and Access 2002 installations with the Office XP
SP3 Patch.
How do I do this?: You can obtain both Office 2003 SP2 and the Office XP SP3 Patch
by going to the website listed below:
