2.05 Guilds and a
Changing Economy

Circled in Blue
• The first picture in the very left shows a man
selling shoes that he made. He made them in
his workshop and sells them to everyone in
town. Before he began making and selling
shoes he was probably a peasant not making
very much money. Now he’s a successful
shoemaker and seller. You start out small and
you work hard to achieve your goals.

• The interaction in the middle circled in orange
shows a man selling different items to people.
Before all they did was trade goods, they
didn’t actually buy their goods until now. They
buy goods with coins. This shows how the
economy started to change in the middle ages.

• The picture on the far right looks like a
merchant that travels from street to street. It
looks like he’s selling porcelain pottery.
Porcelain pottery was original imported from
China, which is probably why he’s a traveling
merchant. He’ll go to China and get the
pottery. By doing that he helps the economy in
China, and by selling them in Europe he’s
helping the economy there.
