Example 3.1
A square foundation is 1.5m x 1.5m in plan. The
soil supporting the foundation has a friction
angle ǿ = 20o, & c’=15.2 kN/m2. The unit
weight of the soil, ‫ץ‬, is 17.8 kN/m3.
Determined the allowable gross load on the
foundation with a factor of safety (FS) of 4.
Assume the depth is 1m & that general
shear failure occurs in soil.
Example 3.2
A square foundation is 1.5m x 1.5m in plan. The
soil supporting the foundation has a friction
angle ǿ = 20o, & c’=15.2 kN/m2. The unit
weight of the soil, ‫ץ‬, is 17.8 kN/m3.
Determined the allowable gross load on the
foundation with a factor of safety (FS) of 4.
Assume the depth is 1m & that local shear
failure occurs in soil.
Example 3.3
A square column foundation has to carry a
Gross allowable total load of 150 kN. The
depth of foundation is 0.7m. The load is
inclined at an angle of 20o to the vertical.
Determined the width of foundation B . Use
equation of Meyerof with the following
properties of soil’, F.O.S=3
friction angle ǿ = 30o
c’=0.
weight of the soil, 18=‫ ץ‬kN/m3.
Example 3.4
A square column foundation 1.5m x 1.5m.
Assume that the one way load ecentricity
e = 0.15m. Determined the ultimate load,Qult,
with the following properties of soil’
friction angle ǿ = 30o
c’=0.
weight of the soil, ‫=ץ‬18 kN/m3.
