Put the skunk out on the table!
• My only reason for being
here is to help you focus on
the Board’s November 16,
2009 direction
• Long relationship with the
Batesville Schools
• Passionate about helping all
students learn—there is no
other agenda
The mission of the Batesville School
District is to provide an appropriate
and quality education for all students
in a safe, harmonious environment in
partnership with parents and the
community. Individuals will be
provided the opportunity to develop
their unique potential as they become
productive citizens in an everchanging world.
November 16, 2009
The Batesville School strives to provide
the highest quality education for our
students. The Batesville School Board
wants to assure that we prepare our
students for today’s world and the
challenges of the future. We want to
engage our students, provide an
environment conductive to learning, and
assure that each student has the skills
and knowledge to succeed.
In order to achieve these goals, we
must assess our district and change
constantly to stay abreast of
student’s needs and the changing
world.
Therefore, I move we initiate an
internal Batesville school district study
to identify effective instructional
methods and ways to promote
effective learning environments for
grades 7 through 12.
This work must involve all junior and
senior high school teachers, all junior
and senior high school administrators,
and students from those grades.
The ultimate goal is to develop a plan
and recommendation for instructional
methods and environmental approaches
for junior and senior high which will
engage students, improve student
performance, and prepare students for
the next step in their lives. This
recommendation must be brought back
to the board by June 30, 2010.
What is the desire
of the school board?
• Provide the highest quality education

What is happening
in other countries?
What should the focus of the
Batesville secondary schools be?
• A plan focused on increased
student engagement.
• A plan to empower
instructional staff with
research-based teaching
strategies and facilitate laserlike, focused instruction.
• A plan and accountability
system based on continuous
improvement.
Why?
• Because children’s brains are
wired differently
• Because we must align
teaching and learning to
tomorrow’s workforce needs
• Because we must
acknowledge world
economic and technological
realities

instruction??
Formative Assessment
• Chunking instruction
• Two-week segments

What about
Career
Technical
Education?
Goal: To provide all students the knowledge, skills, and
experiences necessary to make informed and appropriate
educational and career decisions.
CTE belongs in each school…not
just in Technical Centers.

A question to ponder-As you think about our total
K-12 system today…
Are you uncomfortable
with any of these…
•
•
•
•
•
•
Lack of respect for adults
Unexcused absences
Dropout rate
Unwillingness to do homework
The achievement of many
Discipline problems
You are not alone!
•
•
•
•
Your School Board
Local businesses and corporations
Many elected officials
Many citizens
These people are uncomfortable as well!
Our concerns involve complex
and strategic thinking…
not simple solutions!
We need a very comprehensive
plan that is:
• Aligned with the school board
direction
• Involves stakeholders
• Supported by the community
• Will not be derailed by the naysayers
• Beneficial to the entire community
I present this to you
today because I’m convinced that
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Student engagement
Student achievement
Attendance
Parent involvement
Discipline problems
Willingness to follow directions
Dropout rate
WILL IMPROVE SIGNIFICANTLY over the
next 3-5 years with a good implementation
If those things improve…so will
•
•
•
•
•
•
Faculty morale
Professional quality of life
Legacy fulfillment
Pride in our work
Respect for our work
Our community
…ALL Improve!
The district and the school board
are willing to help with…
• Providing time to work with your colleagues to
reshape things
• Providing time for professional development
• Providing tools for engagement and effectiveness
• Providing resources needed for facilities and
equipment
• Identification of current responsibilities to
“selectively abandon”
• Organizing community support
They are not…
• Blaming anyone for systemic issues
• Asking you to work harder
• Expecting you to do everything “in your
non-contract time”
Question:
Could these be students in
Batesville Junior High
School or Batesville High
School?
Ask yourself this question
Do you believe that
nearly all students can
learn at significantly
higher levels?
REFLECT: Does increasing focus on
teaching strategies make sense?
