Mighty

Reading Period 6
KEY WORD:
Appearances
Supporting Evidence #1

On pages 65-71, the author introduced Iggy as
a big, intimidating man who scares Kevin and
Max.
In the text it said on page 136, “Iggy, when I saw
him that time in the hospital waiting, he was a
chewing a right through his beard he was
worried [about Loretta], and it made me think
he wasn’t such a bad dude after all.”
These statements show that the first thing in the
minds of Max and Kevin is that Iggy is a bad
dude. Then, after the story progressed it shows
that Iggy did care for Loretta and he wasn’t
such a bad guy after all.
Supporting Evidence #2

Kevin comes into the story on pages 6-9 as Max’s
new neighbor, and at first glimpse, he didn’t look all
that sophisticated.
Then, as the story progressed, Kevin starts showing
how smart he really is. A great example would be on
page on page 13 when Max is describing Kevin.
“That’s how he [Kevin] talked, liked just out of a
dictionary. So smart you can hardly believe it.”
This shows that Kevin’s “right of the bat” appearance
was wrong. He was actually very smart instead of the
crazy man he was when Max saw him for the first
time.
SUPPORTING EVIDENCE #3

In the beginning in the book Freak the Mighty, Max
didn’t care about much, he was sad, and he
wasn’t that smart.
On page 86, the book says, “Then she’s [the nurse]
running as fast as me and she’s yelling for
someone to call an ambulance.”
These two statements show a change in Max’s
appearance because at first, he has nothing to
care about. Then, when Kevin comes along, max
changes his character and he starts to care for
Kevin.
Theme Staement
•
I believe the theme of the novel is that
appearances can be deceiving. Your first
guess to what kind of person someone is
may be wrong. There are many examples
in this book to show that. It all goes to
show that you shouldn’t judge a book by
its cover.
