Welcome to Science 11/4
Get your Rock Outline/Chart out and
answer questions 5-8.
Today’s Schedule
1. Finish Rock Chart: Sedimentary Rocks
2. Sedimentary Rocks Activities
Sedimentary Rock
What does sediment mean?
Sediment- small, solid pieces
of material that come from
rocks or living things.
What is a sedimentary
rock?
Rock made of sediment that
goes through a series of
processes.
From Sediment to Rock
Weathering- the break down of rock by wind,
water, ice, gravity, etc.
Erosion- running water, wind, or ice loosen
and carry away fragments of rock.
Interactives . The Rock Cycle . How Rocks
Change
From Sediment to Rock
Deposition- the process by which sediment
settles out of the water or wind carrying it.
Observe how sediments are deposited.
From Sediment to Rock
Compaction- the process that presses
sediments together.
From Sediment to Rock
Cementation- process by which sediments are
glued together and hardened to form rock..

Change

Sedimentary Activities
1. You can work on the Rock Y-Chart.
2. You can write a story about a rock that
goes through the sedimentary process.
3. You can make a sedimentary rock.
Sedimentary Rock Story
Iggy the igneous rock was born on top of a
volcano when it erupted. Iggy began to become
sediment through many years of facing the wind
and rain at the top of the volcano. Erosion
washed iggy down from the volcano into a river
where he was eventually deposited in the
Pacific Ocean. Iggy was feeling the pressure
and began to compact. After thousands of
years, Iggy, now at the ripe old age of 10,000,
cemented and turned into a sedimentary rock.
