Traveling by air can be enjoyable, but it’s often
frightening and strange the first time. I took may little boy,
Douglas, for his first flight last month. When we arrived at
the airport, he wanted to know why the official weighed
the luggage. Then he wondered why he needed a
passport. He didn’t understand what the security check
was for. Then he asked where the airstewardess was.
When he saw the plane, he couldn’t understand how it
could fly in the air. Of course, he wanted to see how the
captain worked and where ha sat. he soon got bored and
started asking when the plane would land. What a lot of
questions! I was pleased when we finally landed.

Unit 11
I’m an African student studying in the U.S.A. To me,
living arrangements and food may be problems, but
studies create the greatest problems. Even though I
had had the advantage of having done my studies in
English in my own country, I found that I couldn’t
keep up with the reading assignments. I made the
mistake of signing up for too many courses. I did not
understand what would be expected of me in each
course. We were given long chapters or even books
to read in a single day. American students read fast,
but I could not.
Many students who go to America aren’t realistic
about their choice of a field of study. The student
DI
Unit 11
should look around him before he leaves home and
ask himself: “Are my goals realistic? Which field of
study will serve my country’s real needs? How can I
use my studies when I come home again?” Before
African students go abroad to study, they must decide
what they want to study and how they can use their
special knowledge when they return home.
