London Healthy Start Data

Local Uptake
• Vitamin uptake is measured by the number of vitamins
claimed from Department of Health
• Levels are low at 1% to 3% nationwide – but gradually
improving!
Scale of the Scheme
• 478,038 women and children supported by Healthy
Start in England
• 2.6million vouchers are issued every 4 weeks
• The claim rate for the scheme is around 80%,
which is in line with the uptake of other meanstested benefits

London Data
• In London, the beneficiary rate for Healthy Start
is 93,220 (including women and children)
• 80% of eligible households claim Healthy Start
scheme (Healthy Start 2010)
• Whilst evidence shows that around 90% of the
vouchers are redeemed (e.g. for infant milk or
fruits and vegetables), only 1% of vitamins are
claimed in London
