Wealthy Town Houses
A wealthy Roman town house
included the following a front
door, a atrium with a pool,
bedrooms, an office
(tablinum), a kitchen, a
garden and a triclinium
(dining room).
Often the gardens had pools
and fountains to help cool
the air. Most large houses
had their own water supply, a
lead pip connected to the
aqueduct system which
supplied the town with
water.
Flats
Flats in the Roman Empire
were very basic and were a
single room that people
would rent out.
Families who lived in flats
had no running water. They
had to haul their water in
from public facilities.
These blocks of flats were
five or six stories high and
were made of wood.
The people that lived in
these flats were not allowed
to cook inside because of
the risk of the flats catching
on fire.
Gardens
The gardens in Rome were
very detailed and had many
statues of gods and
goddesses.
The gardens of a rich person
like a general or senator
were big and had
statues,fountains,different
varieties of plants, and
possibly a large aviary or
two.
City housing
Ordinary living conditions were
often cramped, especially in big
cities. In the city of Rome, these
crowded homes were always in
danger of fire, flood or collapse.
Other families live in rooms behind
their businesses. The poorest
families hired rooms in houses or
above shops, or built huts in back
streets.
Ordinary people only had simple
furniture, such as wooden beds
and stools, woolen blankets,
pottery dishes and metal cooking
pots
