Literary Terms
Review
This review game is played just like
jeopardy. You will be given the
answer, and you will have to state your
response in the form of a question.
A person who tells a story
or gives an account of
what happened
Who is the narrator?
Story leads the reader to
expect one thing, but the
opposite happens.
What is irony?
The problem of the story
What is
the conflict?
A brief story about an
interesting or amusing
event
What is an anecdote?
Clues or hints that
suggest events that will
occur later in the plot
What is Foreshadowing?
Nonfiction written to
convey information.
Ex. Brochures, directions,
manuals, news reports, etc.
What is
informational text?
Vantage point of the story;
how the story is told
What is point of view?
The story of a person’s entire
life written by himself or
herself
What is an autobiography?
The story of a person’s life
written by someone other than
the subject
What is a biography?
Language that appeals to the
senses: sight, taste, sound,
touch, and smell
What are sensory words or imagery?
After the climax; how the
story ends
What is the resolution?
A guess based on clues from
the text
What is an inference?
Keeps the audience/readers
“on the edge of their seats”.
What is a suspense?
The character who works
AGAINST the main
character. (the “bad guy”)
Who is the antagonist?
The main character in a story
Who is the
protagonist?
The moral of the story
What is theme?
The reason an author writes a
passage
Ex: to entertain, persuade, or
inform
What is author’s purpose?
The events that lead to the
climax
What is rising action?
The exciting part - a
turning point in a story
What is the climax?
The methods an author
uses to reveal characters
and their personalities
What is :

• Thoughts and Actions
• How others react
A comparison between 2
things using like or as
Ex: The baby was as cute
as a button.
What is a simile?
A direct comparison
between 2 unlike things
without using like or as.
Ex: Time was a thief.
What is a metaphor?
Giving human characteristics to
an animal, object, or idea
Ex: The sea called out to me.
What is personification?
An exaggerated statement used
to heighten effect
Ex: I must have told you a
million times.
What is a hyperbole?
Sound Words
Ex: splat, bang, ding-dong
What is an onomatopoeia?
