Smarter Balanced Assessment
• Smarter Balanced is a state-led
consortium comprised of members that
have come together to create a highquality system of assessments aligned
with the Common Core State Standards to
measure college and career readiness.
Funded by the Race to the Top
Assessment Program, Smarter Balanced
assessments will be implemented in
Spring 2015 for 11th graders.
Key Elements of Higher Education Agreements
 Offers Washington high school students the
opportunity to establish their readiness for collegelevel coursework based on their scores on the 11th
grade Smarter Balanced assessment
 Represents Washington higher education’s
commitment to improve student college readiness by
– providing an incentive for achieving the Common Core
standards
– creating alternatives for students to use their senior
year more effectively
