Measuring Megan!
By: Ann Gillespie
Hi! My name is Megan. I am 3 feet 4
inches (3’ 4”) tall.
3’4”
This is my friend, John. He is 4 feet 4
inches (4’ 4”) tall.
4’4”
Who is taller, Megan or John?
Correct! John is taller than
Megan. How much taller is
John than Megan?
Hmmm… How could I
figure this out?
I know! I could convert or change the
measurements to inches.
So, how could I change 3’ 4” to only
inches?
We know that there are 12 inches in one
foot, and we have 3 feet. So, we have to
multiply 3 feet x 12 inches, which equals
36 inches. We still have 4 inches left
from 3’ 4”. Therefore, 36 inches + 4
inches, equals 40 inches.
Megan is 40 inches tall!
Now we have to convert 4’ 4” to
inches. We know there are 12
inches in one foot, so we multiply 4
x 12, which equals 48. What do we
do next?
That’s right! Since we still have 4
inches left over, we have to add 48
+ 4, which equals 52.
John is 52 inches tall!
Because we know that Megan is 40
inches tall and John is 52 inches tall, we
can subtract to see how much taller
John is than Megan!
