Objective: • Go over School handbook • Probe prior knowledge of density and solubility.

WHOT happened last week?

Exit Task: Create a test question- then answer it!

A great question must…  Be relevant! Relate your questions to the daily objective   Have content. It must review the scientific ideas discussed during that period.

Complete sentence, with proper grammar Example: Often times two layers form in salad dressing. How can you explain this observation using two properties of matter?

Vocab Responsibilities: Density, Solubility, Reactivity

A great answer…  Must use evidence/information to provide a complete answer to the question.

  Must review the day’s content and also extend the learning or make a connection.

Must be a complete sentence.

Example: The two layers observed show that there are at least two substances in the salad dressing that are not soluble. The substances then separate due to density, with the less dense substance at top.

Materials Make the Toy

The Highlander Sheet  Objective: • Create a data table to record collected data of solubility and density of five known substances.

• •  Responsibilities: Completed data table… including the data (plus anything you need signed Due Friday!)

Using only these ingredients…  Isopropyl alcohol  Water  Mineral oil  Dye #1: red dye  Dye #2: purple dye . . . To create a recipe for a wave toy with 2 layers. o o On page 64, look at chemical models of each ingredient. In your groups, decide on a data table to organize testing each pair of substances listed above to help you create a recipe.

KEEP the following in MIND…  Data must be recorded for every pairing of the chemicals.

•  Data table should be clear, concise, and efficient.

Keep in mind tests can be done for some mixtures of substances as well.

How to start a prototype…

Using a well plate allows the scientist to rapidly test combinations. It also minimizes cost because only a drop or two are used for each test.

The Highlander Sheet  Objective: • 9/11 Create a recipe for a wave toy based on student collected data of solubility and density. Explain at the atomic level.

•  Responsibilities: Reflect and connect c=questions complete

Data from yesterday.

 What your chart should look like.

 You should have all data on solubility in the first 15 minutes of class.

In your Journal RECIPE Creating Sketch the each wave toy and label which chemicals are in each layer… • Pick which wave toy you are going to make based on your “recipes” that you created.

 If you were to dye an oil based paint, would you want to use the purple dye or the red dye? Explain your reasoning.

There were 4 substances in each bottle. Why were there only 2 layers in each wave bottle? Use evidence from your data chart and key vocabulary in your explanation. Did the red dye and purple dye dissolve the same way in all substances? How did this effect your recipe?

Deepwater Horizon

 Deep Water Horizon, an oil platform, exploded in April of 2010. The explosion caused the oil pipeline to crack deep in the ocean. The oil that was released killed many shore birds and animals hundreds of miles away.  Explain how the oil got from crack at the bottom of the ocean to the surface. Then explain why the oil was able to travel to the shoreline.  A strong response will include relevant key vocabulary.

• Your Question: • You need to paint a fence, you do not want the rain to wash it away. Do you use an oil, alcohol, or water based paint? Why.

Excellent test question… The red dye comes in a powder, like Kool-aid, which substance did it dissolve it in?  Alcohol, water or baby oil How do you know?

There are only 2 layers in each bottle because some of the substances were soluble in (mixed with) each other. In the Purple bottle, the oil and dye are soluble and less dense than the mix of alcohol and water. In the RED bottle, alcohol, water, and dye are all soluble and more dense than the oil which floats in a layer on top.
