rate of normal weight peers
•Overweight children are 20% more likely to visit the
emergency room
•The prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes among
adolescents aged 12-19 years jumped from 9% in 1999 to 23%
in 2008
•Predicted that 1 in 3 children born in 2000 will develop
diabetes
•The estimated lifespan of today’s children is shorter than their
parents
•Children and adolescents who are obese have a 70% to 80%
chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.

Each local educational agency that
participates in the National School Lunch
Program or other child nutrition programs
is required by federal law to establish a
local school wellness policy for all schools
under its jurisdiction.
Local school wellness policies are
designed to promote student health and
reduce childhood obesity.

allergies, foods which are served or provided in the
classroom must be purchased, not homemade, and
be in a wrapper which contains nutrition information
and expiration date.

only10% or less of product items.
