SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 1, 2015 “He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all… will give us everything else along with him.” Somehow Abraham intuited this divine mercy in responding to God’s command to slaughter his son Isaac. Only this assurance could compel Abraham to such depths of obedience. Similarly, in the Transfiguration God reveals to Peter, James, and John a glory they could never otherwise imagine. It will require the slaughtering of the Son. “Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful.” Our faithfulness to Christ’s Passion guarantees the handing over of unfathomable life. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: The apostles thought they knew Jesus, but Every year the first two Sundays present the when he changed in front of them at the Transfiguration, they were “afraid.” In whole gamut of human existence, the whole families we cannot freeze relationships because change and growth are range of the history of salvation. On the first inevitable. Children grow up, parents grow old and spouses change. Sunday of Lent the temptation of Jesus Transfigurations are all around us and within us. Relationships can only grow recalls the temptation of every human being when we embrace the new and let go of the old. since the beginning. On this second Sunday PRO-LIFE REFLECTION: “Some people argue that changing laws will not of Lent the transfiguration of Jesus holds out eliminate abortions. It is certainly true that a change of heart is more important than a change of law. What is forgotten, however, is that the law is the great the transformation in glory which is the goal teacher. Children grow up believing that if a practice is legal, it must be of every human hope. // The hope remains as moral.”–Cardinal John O’Connor. yet unfilled. It is too soon to set up tents, STEWARDSHIP: “’Here I am!’ he answered.” – Genesis 22:11. It is easy Jesus continues to remind his disciples that to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. Can we just as first the Son of Man must suffer and be put to easily answer, “Here I am, Lord,” when we go home, when a neighbor needs death. Only then will they begin to understand our help, when a fellow parishioner asks us to join a committee, or when a what “to rise from the dead” means. // We letter asks for our financial help? These are often exactly the places where celebrate Lent caught in the tension between Jesus calls us to be.
