• Comes from Latin word tessella
 Small square stones or tiles used in ancient
Roman mosaics
• A plane tessellation is a pattern made up of
one or more shapes, completely covering a
surface with no gaps or overlaps
• Occur in nature - honeycombs
Tessellations
• Some shapes, or polygons, will tessellate
and others will not.
• They can be created easily using squares,
equilateral triangles, and hexagons.
