Define Banner’s Student Information System

Banner 2000 supports the integrated flow of information throughout Wayne State. It assists the user in resource management. Banner continues this tradition with the Student Information System.

The Student Information System supports the full range of functions necessary for student administration, including: class schedule administration, admissions, academic history, degree audit reporting, registration, academic status, and holds.

Define the features of Academic History

• Academic History enables one to view a student’s grades.

• Grades are rolled to Academic History following each term.

• Academic standing is calculated using user-defined rules regarding probation and Dean's List policies.

• The term GPA information is maintained here.

• Degrees and honors associated with each student can be viewed in this module, along with information on majors, minors, and status. • Transfer course work is recorded in the Academic History module.

Review forms

Banner displays information in forms. This is very similar to a screen in SIS. Each form in HRMS has a seven character name. This name is an acronym that tells you about the type of information it contains, the University business process it’s related to, and much, much more.

Review forms

The information on the forms is organized into blocks. A block is a section of a form or window that contains information related to the current record. If a form or window contains more than one block, each block (except the key block) may be enclosed in a solid line box.

Most blocks have a title. There are three exceptions: • A key block does not have a title.

• If a form or window has only one block, the block does not have a title.

• If a form has a key block and only one other block, the second block does not have a title.

Review forms

The first block on most forms contains key information. (Some forms, especially validation forms and certain list forms, do not have a Key block.) This Key block determines what is entered or displayed on the rest of the form. All information on the form refers to the Key block.

The Key block has at least one field and typically more. For example, a form that maintains financial information may have Key block fields for both a chart of accounts and a fiscal year. The Key block stays on the form as subsequent blocks appear. Occasionally, another window may appear on top of the Key block if the window is unusually large or if the key block is not pertinent to the window.

Key block

When the cursor is in the key block, enterable fields in the key block are enabled. These same fields are disabled when the cursor leaves the key block

Topic 1: Determine what a student’s total GPA was prior to Winter 1998

Assume you may want to determine a returning student’s total GPA prior to Winter 1998 semester so it may be added to Banner’s GPA. Using the Pre Banner Summary Hours and GPA Form (SHAPCMP) you will be able to view a student’s pre-Banner GPA.

This form allows one to view a summary of the students GPA in lieu of the actual converted term's course work. This is helpful when an institution does not intend to convert transcript data, or has chosen to defer the conversion to a later date. The ability to add pre-Banner hours and GPA means that more accurate assessments can be made when determining class level, and in calculating the institutional or transfer GPA.

What you will learn in this topic:

Assume you may want to determine a student’s overall GPA and academic standing for general advising. Using the Term Sequence Course History Form (SHATERM) you will be able to view a student’s overall GPA and current academic standing.

The purpose of this form is to provide a tool to be used by advisors to determine the student's progress on a term-by-term basis. It displays the student's current status and GPA information. Scrolling institutional, transfer, and overall GPA totals are displayed on this form each time the term changes. Institutional and transfer work are displayed separately.

Topic 3: View a student’s GPA based on subject

This is a convenient feature of Banner!

Assume you may want to determine a student’s academic GPA based on their major or a subject area for the purpose of tracking the student's progress in specific subject areas. This information may be useful when determining if a student is eligible for scholarships and awards.

Using the Subject Sequence History Form (SHASUBJ) you will be able to view a student’s GPA by subject area!

The form provides information pertinent to the student's current status as well as GPA information on a subject-by-subject basis. It shows institution entries and all transfer entries flagged to be included in the transfer GPA. Scrolling totals on a subject-by-subject basis are kept for institutional, transfer, and overall GPAs. The form allows the entry of a specific beginning subject area to avoid having to scroll through multiple subject areas if only one is required.

Topic 2: View transcript events and comments

Using the Transcripts Events and Comments Form (SHATCMT) you will be able to view transcript events and comments.

The purpose of this form is to capture significant events and comments pertaining to a student's tenure at the institution. Optionally, these entries may be printed on the student's official transcript. Features of this form include the following: • • These events/comments will be maintained centrally (not by S/C/D’s).

Events and level-specific comments are associated with a specific student level.

• • • Comments are entered with an effective date in the future to avoid inclusion on the transcript before the time deemed appropriate by the requester. All event and comment information is identified with a specific originator and is informational only. All transcript events and comments will display regardless of who was the originator.

What you will learn in this topic:

Topic 3: Organize a student’s non-course paper or transcript activity

Assume you want to organize a student’s non-course activities that are needed for graduation in a central form. These activities may include a paper, service on a committee, or an event. In this case, only information concerning a student’s paper and transcript event will be addressed. Using the Academic Non-Course Form(SHANCRS) you will be able to organize a student’s non-course paper activity.

This form is used to tie papers, committees, or events together (individually or in combination) as non-courses associated with a degree in academic history. This is a convenient feature of Banner and could be very useful for graduate students!

What you will learn in this topic:

• How to organize a student’s non-course activities using the Academic Non-Course Form (SHANCRS).
