• • • •
Overview
National Health IT Plan published in 2010 – first plan of its kind in NZ National Health IT Board has updated the Plan – this is now available on the IT Board’s website.
The update to the Plan signals priorities to the end of 2014, as well as future directions. Next steps: the Plan will be revised to cover the period 2015 to 2019, and will provide the sector with direction and priorities for IT investment.
The reason for the IT Plan
• • • • • •
Murray Milner, Chair of the IT Board
IT plays a key role in ensuring our health system offers the best possible care Well-designed systems help reduce costs, improve efficiency and give patients better, safer treatment The sector is moving services to more effective platforms that can deliver care closer to home This is about putting communities and the needs of consumers and patients at the centre of health care New Zealand is up with the world’s leaders when it comes to having a good roadmap for the sector’s use of IT Privacy, security, confidence and trust – these are emphasised in the IT Plan.
• •
What success will look like
New Zealanders: Understand, support and trust how their electronic health information is recorded, managed and accessed Participate in new models of care and are more involved in their own care • Can and do access a core set of their personal health information shared with their health practitioners Clinicians: • Can access relevant information at the point of care • Can use information systems to enhance their delivery of care
• • •
The Plan will have been achieved when:
DHB regions: Have implemented sustainable common platforms in each region to manage patient administration and clinical information Have good regional leadership and governance models in place, and timely and robust decision-making Have interoperable systems that can seamlessly and securely share information.
