Spotting Ball
•
•
Know previous spot, yard line and lateral position
Hustle to pile to get the ball
• Prevent extra unnecessary activity
• Talk/yell to players – let them know your present
• Okay to move outside of in-bounds mark to get to the pile
• Release covering official as soon as possible
• Make sure players are non-combatant prior to retrieving dead ball
•
Take spot from terminal’s down-field foot (from closest terminal)
• Take signal from terminal when spotting, terminals may subtly tap upfield or down-field leg with hand to move spot
• Should take no more than 3 seconds to spot after down ends
• Okay to let back judge spot long pass (if he is not observing payers)
• Okay to blow whistle and spot [rare] when no whistle from terminals and
you see the ball in possession and the player is downed (e.g. fumble)
•
Goal line and close to first down
• Terminals pinch in to the spot; so give them the ball to spot on ground
• Do not signal touch down – terminals signal, if no whistle and you know
for sure that ball broke plain, nod your head – terminals can then blow
whistle and signal (this takes a lot of trust – nod head only if you’re
sure) [rare]
5-Man Mechanics - Umpire – (Scrimmage Play)
Communication

•
Stand over ball facing referee
Signal down to terminals
•
•
•
•
•
•

Signal 11 w/ fist; eye contact w/ referee [well-being check]
(Signal start clock on ready (wind w/ finger; if you’re sure)
Signal out-of-bounds (palms back, both arms down; if you’re sure)
Signal when center is protected, say “stay off of snapper”
Talk to defense
•
•
•
•
•
Signal down; eye Contact w/ each terminal [well-being check]
Observe that terminal is ready (stay over ball if terminals not ready)
Should also note that back judge is ready [well being check]
Take signal from terminal when spotting, terminals may tap up-or
down-field leg to move spot

pass)

•
• Laterally: inside of tight ends
Change position (so A doesn’t use you for picks)
Adjust for defensive positions (get out of their way)
Hands on knees
Whistle in mouth ? (spit out after snap)
Prevent “happy steps” – move only when needed (and to
save yourself)
•
•
Open up to play, use keys, keep play boxed in w/ other officials
Observe action around runner’s halo
•
•
Clean-up
•
•
•

around runner (to your side and to the back or front)
Stay to side of and behind runner
Move to opposite side of role-out or sweep (move towards midfield)
Stay reasonably close to pile
Hustle to pile on the whistle (prevent extra action after whistle)
