Prevention of Root Causes Through Education

Eliminating Obstetric Fistula in Liberia US$600,000 Goals: • Help eliminate obstetric and traumatic fistula • Improve health and socio economic status of more than 400 women and girls • Reduce maternal mortality, morbidity and sexual violence against women • 100 inoperable fistula survivors will be identified and empowered by 2016

Eliminating Obstetric Fistula in Liberia Progress • A pilot revolving fund loan scheme increased health facility delivery from 5 percent of the clinic’s area population to 25 percent.

• Procured and distributed essential drugs and medical supplies for maternal health services.

• 20 fistula survivors were trained to serve as advocates.

HIV-Free Generation in Rwanda Goals: • Contribute to a nation free of AIDS and build an HIV-free generation.

• Support the national scale-up strategy for One Stop Centers.

• Invest in community-based prevention of violence.

• Improve access to HIV prevention and care in underserved and vulnerable populations.

• Empower women and girls to protect and claim their rights to safety and dignity.

• Strengthen national capacity for programming for HIV-positive adolescents and HIV health systems .

HIV-Free Generation in Rwanda Progress • Increased number of health facilities providing Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission services • Reduction in new pediatric HIV infections • 109 health workers in 32 clinics received training, expected to benefit more than 2,000 pregnant women and families annually • Adolescent friendly services are now a key component of the program with more than 7,000 beneficiaries, aged 10 19 years

Gender Responsive Schools in Vietnam US$644,000 Goals: • Create a school environment for adolescents that is free from gender-based violence.

• Promote gender equal norms and respond to gender-based violence in and around 20 schools in Hanoi.

• Actively engage adolescent school children in preventing and responding to school-related gender-based violence.

Gender Responsive Schools in Vietnam Progress • Plan Vietnam has trained 450 youth leaders on leadership and innovative communication skills. • As a result, 20 school-wide events were successfully initiated on school-related gender-based violence and were covered by 36 local newspapers and radio programs.

• The project trained 500 teachers, giving them knowledge on gender and gender-based violence.

Goals:

Delaying Early Marriage in Niger US$1,000,000 • Reduce early marriage and early pregnancy.

• Reach 25,000 adolescent girls; 400,000 members of their community will benefit. • Adolescents will develop health, social, and economic assets; know their rights; be safer and have a protection against violence; and more.

Delaying Early Marriage in Niger Progress Pilot Phase Update: November 2014 • The girls improved their health knowledge and changed their health-seeking behavior.

• The girls now aim for autonomy and have enhanced their financial capacities.

• The girls know how to be heard and they want to be heard.

• The girls say no to early and forced marriage.

• Parents change their perceptions of their girls.

• Dialogue starts in communities.

Voices Against Violence US$986,000

Goals:

• Prevent and reduce gender discrimination and violence against women and girls.

• Develop action plans for participants to roll out the curriculum.

• Increase engagement of young people in prevention of gender stereotypes, discrimination and violence.

• Enhance participants’ understanding of the safety measures to deliver the curriculum.

Voices Against Violence Progress • The first of four regional workshops was held in Pune, India, in December 2014, where 48 trainers (from seven countries) participated.

• Each trainer is expected to run national trainings that will train an additional 30 leaders in their home countries to deliver the Voices Against Violence curriculum to young people, ages 5 to 25 years.
