THEORIES OF THE
GREAT SCIENTISTS
By Adam Paller, Cassius Peters, And Cross
MacDonald
PTOLEMY
-
Ptolemy was a mathematician, a geographer and also an astronomer. He had made maps of the
world that he knew of at the time (picture of a map based on the land that he knew of at the bottom)
and based it off of latitude and longitude.
-
There are no records of Ptolemy’s date of birth, but scientists think it was around 90 AD. He had died
in 168 AD and was not married.
-
Ptolemy was one of the scientists that used the Geocentric model (a picture of it below) to determine
that the sun was orbiting the Earth and that the Earth was the center of all movements in space.
-
When Copernicus came into play, he disproved Ptolemy, but Ptolemy’s model was more accurate.
-
Even though Ptolemy was wrong about the Geocentric theory, he was one of the first scientists to
start observing the orbital patterns concerning the movements of the solar system.
Galileo (1564-1642)
-Galileo was born in 1564, and died in 1642.
-When Galileo was born, that same year, Michelangelo died and
William Shakespeare was born, which some say he was destined for
greatness because of that event.
-After voicing his opinion about the universe, Galileo was trialed for
heresy (going against the church) for theorizing that the Earth was not
the center of the universe, but that something different was in the
center.
-When threatened to be killed for the crime, Galileo had to publicly
withdraw his theory and admit that he had lied about what he had
thought was true.
-Galileo was still allowed to research after this incident but not allowed
to publicly announce his findings.
-Galileo died at age 78, contributing a huge part to the scientific
revolution, and starting a fury of scientific discoveries.
COPERNICUS (1473-1543)
-To our knowledge about how Copernicus thought, people looked into what kind of questions he
asked himself. One of the questions he asked were as un-ordinary as how many grains of sand are
there in the cosmos?
-after lots of research, Copernicus disproved Ptolemy’s theories, having the first heliocentric theory.
-Copernicus has been referred to as the father of modern astronomy. As well as being an
astronomer, Nicholas was also a governor.
-Copernicus never married. People say that he was too committed to doing his work and theorizing
how the solar system works.
JOHANNES KEPLER (1571-1630)
-
Kepler confirmed the theory that the sun is the center of the solar system.
When Kepler was trying to find planets, he would try to find dips of light
in the stars
When Kepler was researching the solar system, the telescope was so
powerful that if it was in space, it could see someone turn off the porch
What Kepler wanted to find out first was which planets orbited stars, such
as our sun, and why.
A ‘mission’ that Kepler came up with was how common or rare pieces of
earth was in the Milky Way
