The flag was first authorized by Congress on June 14, 1777.

When a flag can no longer be fixed, it should be destroyed (ex. burning) Anyone can have a flag draped over their coffin.

How to fold the flag

1.

*The flag is folded 13 times in order to make a triangle. Each fold has its own symbol.* Begin by folding the flag’s lower portion over the upper portion, covering the canton (field of stars).

2. Repeat this fold so that the canton is on top.

3. Next, the person holding the stripe end makes a triangular fold over the top of the flag.

4. This fold is repeated, each time folding the over the top of the flag.

5. When finished, the flag should be in a nice neat triangle, showing only the stars in the blue field.
