Security Training

Course Objectives

This OLM course is to be completed prior to attending face to face security training and is:  To ensure the safety and security of everyone who comes to and works in secure services  To ensure all staff have an awareness of security protocols  Awareness of the secure service environment  Introduction to See Think Act (DOH 2010) It is a requirement that following completion of this OLM course that you read the secure services protocols. This is available on intranet under Policies>procedures>operational procedures>secure services

Security in Balance

There are 3 types of Security:-

Gathering intelligence, positive relationships, maintaining control, morale, authority,

Relational

constructive daily routines

Security Physical Security

Walls, fences, airlocks, doors, CCTV, dogs, Trakka, Pin point, keys/locks

Searching, observations, briefings/handover drug testing, risk assessments, tools, cutlery and sharps control

Entering Brockfield House

To enter Brockfield House you must:-

        Bring Identification All visitors will be processed by the Security Department Be responsible for your visitors for the duration of their visit to your department All staff must wear name badges at all times Only security staff are authorised to issue fobs and keys, and this is when security training both on OLM and face to face are fully completed. At this time you will allocated a set of keys in Trakka with a individual PIN number and access code number.

All staff must wear a belt, issued by security and attach a fully charged Personal Infrared Transmitter (PIT) personalised infrared transmit alarm belt at all times. Pass keys must be attached to the lanyard on the belt and kept in the pouch on the belt when not in use Keys should not transferable between staff or leave Brockfield House. If a key is missing/lost then this must be reported immediately to security staff.

The Trakka system will monitor the times you release your keys and fob and the time these are replaced in the Trakka cabinet.

Please be aware that CCTV is in operation in Brockfield House, Car Park, in main car park entrances/exits wards and ICS lounges. START FINISH

Entering the wards

To gain entrance to the wards please follow the following procedure  If possible call ahead to advise the ward  Ring the doorbell  If your access control fob allows you may enter the airlock  Sign in and wait for the security nurse  Use the hand gel  Sign out when leaving

Doors and locks

 All external doors must be locked at all times  Internal doors between wards and departments must be locked at all times  Only one air lock door to open at any time.

 Before opening any internal doors be aware of who is around you, do not allow tailgating 

assume that a patient has leave to get into the rear reception lobby

Question What should you do when visiting another ward?

Sign in and enter the ward Walk in and continue to do whatever was your reason for visiting the ward Ring the doorbell, sign in, sanitise your hands and report to the security nurse/nurse in charge

Internal Security

It is your responsibility to:        Report any damage immediately in your area – don’t assume someone else will do this Not bring in prohibited items Retrieve any sharp items or potential weapons and hand in to security Be aware of the risks of contractors working on site If you need assistance use your PIT Inform security staff of any visitors to the unit Inform security staff of any new admissions

External Security

It is your responsibility to:       Only enter and leave via Main Reception If you unlock a door, always secure it or wait for it to fully re-engage Retrieve any sharp items or potential weapons and hand in to security Beware of tailgating particularly into airlocks Report any odd or unusual patient behaviour Report any unattended ladders, tools or open gates

The Goods Yard

For catering and portering staff only

   Specific procedure for accessing the goods yard via Facilities Management (FM) and catering areas Swap main key set for FM airlock set using coded lock cabinets in FM area and main kitchen Reverse procedures upon re-entry .

General security considerations

 If you leave your desk/ward inform your colleagues    Remind your colleagues if they forget to adhere to any secure services protocols.

Ensure you have clear desk procedures Ensure all information is cleared from faxes and printers

Prohibited and Restricted Items

Mobile Phones Glue Non prescribed drugs Sharps Blue Tac Camera’s Top shelf magazines Cans Any open or unpackaged consumables Any games console with Wi Fi/camera Chewing gum Combustibles (lighter/smoking materials) Over 18’s DVD’s Solid soap

Question How would you direct a visitor to Brockfield House to their required destination?

Explain the signage on then leave them to find their own way Escort them yourself and inform the receiver of the visitor

Trafficking

The trafficking of any prohibited items will not be tolerated by the Trust, this includes:    Unauthorised carrying of contraband onto wards Unauthorised passing of contraband to a patient Unauthorised passing of contraband from a patient to staff The unauthorised passing of contraband from patient to patient is more difficult to stop however this should be proactively discouraged by all staff and if any instances are seen then these should be reported.

REMEMBER THAT TRAFFICKING

 Directly breaches security.

  It undermines the safety of the wards.

It put the welfare of patients and staff at risk.

Trafficking is a serious offence. Any staff involved in trafficking will face disciplinary action. START FINISH

Escorts

It is key to remember that all escorts must be planned, with the only exceptions being      In cases of emergency As directed by Nurse in Charge or Head of Security Registered Clinician.

Prior to leave taking place the escorting nurse must have a handover A risk assessment must take place before leaving by the Nurse in charge All escorts must have a relevant section 17 completed, however in emergency medical cases this may not be possible. All terms and conditions of section 17 must be adhered to when escorting, this being patients will remain in eyesight at all times.

Staff are not permitted to use escorting times for their own personal gain, therefore:    

No staff mobile use is permitted No personal shopping, There must be no acceptance of gifts e.g. food/drinks No meeting/chatting to friends/relatives as this may put yourself and others at risk.

Staff should take a Trust mobile phone from security to use when escorting, if there are any issues then the escorting staff should contact the ward and speak to the Nurse in Charge. In emergencies i.e. absconding or aggression staff should telephone the police for assistance.

Site Etiquette

When visiting Brockfield please be aware that the following procedures are good practice  Main gates – wait until these are fully open before driving through  Speed limit is 10 miles per hour  Main roundabout – observing the highway code.  Doors – use handles and push plates not the glazed panels  Damage

must

be reported  Deliberate damage to the buildings or equipment is a disciplinary offence  Litter is everyone’s responsibility so pick it up and dispose appropriately  Switch off lights when not in use  Clear desk policy – information governance policy  Do not move the furniture from area to area
