Purpose of This Playbook

    

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS YOU CAN EMAIL ME [email protected] or call me at 847-837 1413

This playbook can be utilized at any level but is really designed for ages 8-14 which is beginning and Middle School Athletes. Most plays can be utilized for High School but the passing attack should be expanded.

This playbook has been designed to cover most of the plays that I have experienced running over the last 7 years. I have been running the Double Wing for the last 3, the Jet for 2 years and will be running the Gun or SST for the first time in 2005.

I highly recommend that you work on the base plays first. For the first game you should have all of the base plays in. As the the weeks go by, add a play or two based on what you want to attack based on your scouting reports. I recommend 1 more pass play per week and 1 new run play There are many plays in this playbook. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RUN ALL OF THE PLAYS TO BE SUCCESSFUL. Many coaches have asked, which plays are the best to run at certain levels. The following grid is my recommendation:

Double Wing Formation & Numbering

Tackles, TEs and Guards have 0 splits – They are Toe to Toe 6 inch splits between Guard and Center. Lineman line up on belt buckle of center with your down hand even with the center’s foot.

We number men NOT holes 7 5 3 C 2 4 6 B Back

One Yard from QB

(Fullback)

2 point stance straddle the TE’s Hip – 1 yard back 2 point stance straddle the TE’s Hip – 1 yard back We always line up in this formation unless we call another formation in the huddle.

How We Call Plays

  

First Word = Formation Second Word = Motion Third Word = 2 Digits

 

First Digit tells the B Back where to go Second Digit tells who the “AT” man is – where the ball is going

 

Fourth Word = tells you the blocking rules

EXAMPLE Tight – Rip -- 88 -- Super Power

Formation Motion B Back goes to 8 The Ball is going to 8 Tells you your blocking rules

The man furthest from the “AT” man carries the ball.

The Snap Count

In order for us to keep the defense off balance we will use the following varying snap count.

Black 85! -- Black 85! – GO! – Readyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy – Hut

    

If the QB calls the play and says “ON Black” then you go on the second “Black Word” If the QB calls the play and says“ON GO” then go on GO! The Motion Man goes in motion on Readyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy To keep ourselves from jumping off sides and to keep the defense off balance we always:

run all B back (fullback) plays – Wedge, 4X, 5X, 6G, 7G on Black!

 

All Pass plays on GO! run all other plays on Hut We can also change the play at the line of scrimmage if the QB;

 

calls a color other than Black – like “RED” & then calls the play EXAMPLE: “RED 6G!” --- “RED 6G!” – THAT MEANS THE PLAY IS NOW 6G

Offensive Line Blocking Rules

General Rule

 – If the play is coming to the “AT” Man on your side then your blocking rule is:

GAP – ON - READ UP

 This means that you block down to the GAP AWAY from the play first.  If no one is there then block the man on you  If no one is there then block the first linebacker strait ahead or inside

.

FOR EXAMPLE

: Tight RIP 88 Super Power – GAP – ON – READ UP

Read Up Gap On “AT MAN”

8

QB    

THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE – THEY ARE;

If you are a Guard and you hear the words “G,”O”, “2” or “3” this means you are pulling.

If you Hear the word “REACH” then you block the GAP toward the “AT Man or the side of the play On 4X and 5X - X means that the Tackle and the Guard are executing a cross block – Tackle goes first.

Offensive Line Blocking Rules “On” or “OFF” call

 

“ON” and “OFF” calls for Tight Ends, A and C Backs

 Tight Ends are required to make an “ON” or OFF call on

every play.

  The ON or OFF call tells the A or C back which man to block Lets break the blocking rule down in steps; 

Step I

 The Tight End will come to the Line and apply his blocking rule GAP-ON-READUP 

Step II

 If the Tight End has someone in his

GAP and NO ONE ON HIM

– he calls “OFF”  “OFF” tells the A or C Back to

Read UP to the inside Linebacker

Step III

 If the Tight End has a MAN ON him then he calls “ON”  “ON” tells the A or C back to

Double Team

with him.

Both Tight Ends are required to make this call even if the play is not coming to your side. We do this to fool the defense.

Offensive Line Blocking Rules - Center

On every play the Center will bock – MAN ON - MAN AWAY

 There is only ONE exception to this rule and it is when we face an Eagle or 7 Man GAP front or when the Center must fill for a Pulling Guard and he is covered.

  Lets break the blocking rule down in steps:

Step I

 The Center comes to the LOS and looks at the front  If he sees a

MAN ON

him and a

MAN ON THE BACKSIDE GUARD

dictates that the Guard is going to pull, he CALLS

“GAP IT”

and the play  

“GAP IT”

– Tells the Guard Tackle and the Tight End to Once the

“GAP IT”

tells everyone that they are blocking down.

BLOCK DOWN

call is made then the Guard, Tackle and Tight End call it too. This 

FOR EXAMPLE

: Tight RIP 88 Super Power – Against a 7 Man Front

“GAP IT!”

Philosophy of the JET

JET + DOUBLE WING – The deadly combination .

The Jet offense is designed to apply pressure to certain points of the defense. Its main attack and pressure points are focused at the “Edge” of the defense. The “Edge” is considered from the C Gap out to the sideline. The JET takes advantage of a defense that has been lulled to sleep with an inside tackle or power running game. The offense utilizes the base play as the sweep to put pressure on the outside linebacker, defensive end and cornerback. It forces these positions to respect the danger of the quick motion handoff to the sprinting wingback that threatens the defense sweeping either side of the field. It forces the defense to adjust in order to respect the outside and widens the defenders opening up other complimentary JET plays such as the quick dive and trap as well as double wing plays like SP’s, the traps and wedge. It also allows the ends to slip behind corners and outside linebackers that pursue the fake Jet sweep play.

When to utilize the JET

The first adjustment that most opposing defensive coaches will attempt to stop the double wing will be to line up as many players in the box as possible. Many times this results in a 5 down lineman front, two stand up crashing defensive ends, cornerback’s that are rolled up on the LOS and blitzing linebackers. Coaching the double wing you will be challenged with this type of defense with many variations. The defensive philosophy will be to stop the base off tackle Superpower toss play by crashing the DE’s and taking away the play side double team advantage. There are many ways to attack this type of defensive strategy. We have been successful with the wedge isolating the #2 hole and many times have broken the play for touchdowns. Other successful plays are the 47 and 56 counter to the A or C backs and even a quick explode pass. However, we have been most successful with the JET in responding to this type of defensive play.

It is best to utilize the JET sweep when the following circumstances exist:  § The defense crowds the box with 7 or more players putting their DE’s tight and rolling the corner close the LOS  § When the DE are tight and crashing and the corner is on the LOS with outside contain responsibility.

 §  § When you have established your inside double wing power game and the LB’s are filling from the C gap down. Safeties are rolled up to 5-6 yards off the LOS.

•In the game when this defense appears, do not waste any time calling a JET sweep. We like to run to the split end side and the wide side of the field with our fastest back. We run this play first and it almost always goes for big yardage or a TD. However, do not worry if it does not go for big yardage. Just showing the JET sweep will elevate the other coach’s paranoia and many times force an adjustment. We have a planned THE FOLLOWING play-calling segment that we utilize that almost always works for us.  § Split right JET right sweep  § Split Left JET left sweep  §  § A JET – 2 Wedge ( surprises LB’s who are running out after the JET man) Stack I – Toss sweep right (good power play run outside the DE)  §  §  § C Jet 3Trap at 4 (fast hitting trap play to FB no delay) A JET 47 counter (usually kills them) If the coach adjusts and widens his DE’s and moves his corners out and adds a LB - 88 Superpower, then 99 Superpower, then 88 superpower again, trap, wedge counter.

The whole philosophy of adding the JET to our offense is to make the Power Game of the Double Wing even more effective. Remember, once the coach adjusts by boxing his defensive ends and he stops blitzing the LB’s, go back to the DW power game again and stay with it until he makes another adjustment. Then go back to the JET or other plays that counter the adjustment.

Philosophy of the STACK I

STACK I + DOUBLE WING = POWER FOOTBALL.

 The Stack I formation is a compliment in the true sense to the Double wing set. For the most part, the Double Wing plays can be run from many sets. The Stack I formation just gives the plays a different look. One of the benefits to the stack I is that you do not have motion on power plays. This is an advantage if the defense is following the motion man on the SP or Toss. Now you can run the toss via a handoff to the deep back or a Toss without giving away where the play is going. It also gives the second back the advantage of getting a running start as a lead blocker so that he can blast the LB.

The fullback is still in the same position as tight formation and the blocking does not change. One of the advantages of the stack I is also the ability to run a nice toss sweep when the second back goes into motion and crack’s the DE. The deep back can read this block and make an effective cut off of this block. It is also a nice series to run the trap plays from when you have run the Toss.

When to utilize the Stack I

 We like to run the stack I if we need a couple of yards or if we just want to jam the ball down the throat of the opposing team. We also like to run a toss sweep which pins all of the defenders inside when they have 8 players in the box or the LB’s are filling. This is a great play when you pull both the play side OT and OG and they seal off all inside pursuit. The Stack I gives us a different look and allows a very talented tailback more view of the play because he is deeper in the backfield. The toss out of the stack I works great with blitzing Lbers. Here is when we run the Stack I: • 8 guys in the Box – we like to run the Toss sweep with the second back in motion cracking the end -- until the DE moves out • When you need to blast the defense and play smash mouth football or take advantage of a weak side.

• When you want to run the Super Power plays without motion because the defense is following or flowing to the motion man. • When you have a talented fast Tailback. The toss sweep allows this player to read the block on the DE and break inside or outside.

PASSING GAME

  

Philosophy of the passing game

Quite frankly, we do not pass much. When we do, we expect to either score or make it a very large gain. Not to say that the DW is not a good passing Offense. The reason for not many passes is because if you gain an average of 5 yards on every play, who wants to pass?

We throw high percentage passes designed for Youth teams; Outs, slants, crossing and drags and a screen that is very effective. Passes are no more than 20 yards. All the plays we use can be run from Gun formation or from QB under center.

Everything we do is play action with either motion or a fake to the run. All passes have only 2 primary and secondary receivers. At the youth level we have found that if we keep it to 2 our QB becomes very effective.
