• Full name is Pablo Diego José Francisco de
Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los
Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad
Clito Picasso Ruíz.
• Father was a small time painter.
• Began training as a painter at age 7.
• Age 13 Picasso surpasses his father and
father no longer paints. He puts all his time
in developing Pablo’s talent.
• Attended the Royal Academy of San
Fernando – an art school equivalent to the
Italian school of Saint Luke.
• Picasso disliked taking orders so he dropped
out.
• Was extremely fascinated with works by El
Greco.
• Travels to Paris (The center for all art
movements.)
• Gertrude Stein begins collecting Picasso
works in 1905. He was 24. Stein is a very
rich American family with both star and
political influences.
• Henri Matisse was Picasso’s friend and
greatest art rival.
• Picasso married twice and had many
mistresses.
• Paints Guernica as a reminder of the horrors
of war. (WWII)
• Member of the Communist party.
Styles
• Painted with pastels and oils, typically on
cardboard and wood, in his early years.
• Developed the style of Cubism.
• Cubism takes ordinary pictures and turns
them into geometric shapes thus allowing
the viewer to see the figure from multiple
angles.
• Dabbles in Surrealism.
• Surrealism – dream-like characteristics.
Shock art (What can I do to draw interest?)
3 major periods
• Blue period – paints in all blues to express
his depression over the death of his friend.
• Rose period – Either roses or a rose color.
Represents a state of mind that has turned
from depression to a state of joy.
• Cubism – art form based on geometrical
shapes.
