Hydrated Crystals Pre-Lab.
Hydrated crystalline compounds retain water (water of
hydration). The ratio of molecules of water to molecules
of compound is a small whole number.
Example: Hydrated compound copper (II) sulfate
CuSO4 . 5H2O
Every molecule of CuSO4 in the crystal, has 5 molecules of
H2O attached.
In this Lab. we are going to determine how many molecules of
water are attached to a molecule of FeCl2.
FeCl2 ? H2O

Hydrated Crystals Pre-Lab.
Pre-Lab. questions: (Your key to the Lab.)
1. What information is necessary to
determine the percentage of water in a
hydrate sample?
2. How will the water be removed from the
hydrate in this experiment?
3. A certain hydrate has the formula
MgSO4. 7H2O. What is the percent water
in this hydrate?
