Continuing the superior legacy of the laptop immersion program of Clovis Unified

• The laptop program began at Alta Sierra in 1996. Since that time, the program has grown where at least 50% of our families purchasing a laptop for their child’s use at school. Our Alta Sierra community has continued to support the laptop program at this high level for the past 17 years .

Do you know your Students have… • • • • • • Only known a world with high speed access, no dial up.

Only known a world where if they don’t know something, they look it up online.

Only known a world where “Google it” is a verb.

Only known a world where when they want it (Music, Movies, TV, Games) they get it… Instantly. Only known a world where cellphones are an extension of their body.

Only known a world where social media addiction and vibrating leg syndrome are actually medically recognized afflictions!!!

When your student turns 16 will you give them your keys and say GO?

What about a Laptop?

• • • • We need to teach our students to be responsible digital citizens.

They need to know the responsibilities that come with owning a Laptop.

They need to know the consequences that come with misusing a Laptop.

You as a parent have the right to check their device whenever YOU want.

What is your students Digital Footprint?

• • • A digital footprint is what your student leaves behind on the web.

Everything they blog, text, send, or chat over the internet can be searched.

Students tend to be less censored online, especially when they don’t think adults are watching.

Help keep our students aware.

• • • Check their Laptop/accounts periodically • Not to snoop but to keep them accountable Remind them what they post now will never go away and can be searched by employers later.

• • 80% of the top employers search social media to recruit.

37% use social media to screen candidates.

Don’t post legal documents/schedules

Every AB class a laptop class!

• • Laptop are fully integrated in language arts and history for: instruction, research, collaboration, teacher feedback, online and digital textbooks, teachers’ web pages, Edmodo, projects, more projects, testing.

District created student Google email accounts and unlimited online storage from Google Drive.

• • • Where do these laptops come from?

Each AB class (7 th and 8 th ) will have a loaner laptop for students to share in class.

Families may choose to purchase a laptop for their child that he/she will use exclusively. Extends learning past the time in class.

Increased usage in other classes such as Science and Math, which are incorporating more and more technology in their daily lessons.

What about SAFETY?

• • Specific laptop lockers are located outside the gym. Students use their own locks to secure their laptops when they are not using them.

Laptops are NOT allowed in the PE locker rooms or other unsupervised areas

Usefulness beyond junior high

• • The ideal laptop program articulates a two year scope and sequence where students build their technology skills from one year to the next. Depending on the durability of the laptop, many can be passed on for younger siblings to use in later years.

• Students going on to the high school and college levels have stated that the laptop skills they learned in junior high gave them an edge with school work. • Increased proficiency with computer applications, advanced online research skills, and overall confidence with approaching and using new technologies are all benefits they reported .

Through the Laptop program students will evolve into digital citizens who excel in the classroom through creativity and expertise in digital media platforms. It is our goal that upon graduation, all students will utilize technology effectively to promote educational and professional growth, as well as understand the importance of communication and collaboration for their next educational platform.
