Stephen Tong
Stephen Tong was born in China in 1940 and became a
Christian in 1975. He has been called ‘the Billy Graham of
southeast Asia’.
He founded the Reformed Evangelical Church of
Indonesia (GRII) in 1989 to establish Reformed
congregations committed to evangelism.
In 2004, GRII had congregations in five Indonesian cities.

In 2008, the Reformed Millennium Center of Indonesia in Jakarta was
finished.
It includes
• the Messiah Cathedral (a 4800-seat auditorium)
• a theological seminary, STT Reformed Injili Internasional,
• a Christian school
• an Asian art museum
• a symphony hall
It took 16 years to persuade the Indonesian government to issue a
permit to build the church.
It is one of the largest Chinese Christian evangelical church facilities in
the world, with 600 000 square feet (56 000 m2) of space.
