Type 1 : Partial or total removal of clitoris
and or the prepuce (Clitoridectomy)
This could also include removal of the
clitorial hood/prepuce only; or (type 1a)
Removal of the clitoris with the prepuce
(type 1b)




Type 2 : Partial or total removal of clitoris
and the Labia Minora with/without excision
of the Labia Minora
Removal of the labia minora only (type 2a)
Partial/total removal of the clitoris and labia
minora (type 2b)
Partial/total removal of the clitoris, labia
minora and labia majora. (type 2c)



Type 3: Narrowing of the vaginal opening
and creating a seal by cutting and placing
together the labia minora and/or the labia
majora with or without excision of the
clitoris (Infibulations)
Removal and apposition of the labia minora
(type 3a)
Removal and apposition of the labia majora
(type 3b)

Type 4: All other harmful procedures to the
female genitalia for non medical purposes,
for example pricking, piercing, incisions
into, scraping, cauterisation etc.



FGM procedures may be accompanied by a
ceremony and seen as an important occasion.
Despite celebrations, FGM is a traumatic
ordeal and may have psychological effects
Women have reported:

Anxiety
Panic Attacks
Psychosexual problems





It is estimated that at least 125 million girls and
women have experienced FGM in 29 Countries in
Africa and Middle East
Estimated 30 million girls are at risk over the
next 10 years
500,000 women and girls living in Europe have
undergone FGM and another 180,000 girls are at
risk of FGM
Estimated that 10% deaths occur following FGM
No data is available for Columbia, Jordan, Oman,
Saudi Arabia, Indonesia or Malaysia although
reports state that FGM is practiced there.


Over 137,000 girls and women living in England
& Wales have undergone FGM according to 2014
data
Since 2008, 1.5% of woman who gave birth in
England and Wales had undergone FGM, 3500 of
those in London (Forward UK 2015)
144,000 girls were born to Mother from FGM
affected countries (data: between1996-2010 Equality Now
2014)

Since 2006 around 2100 women have sought
hospital treatment for FGM

Ireland (Scotland has its own law)
◦ It is illegal to practice FGM in the UK
◦ It is illegal to take girls who are British Nationals
or permanent residents of UK, abroad for FGM
regardless of whether it is legal in that country.
◦ It has a penalty of up to 14 years in prison and/or
fine.

These were re-launched in 2014 and provide
advice and support to frontline practitioners to
safeguard children and protect adults from abuse
Guidelines provide advice but is not statutory
guidance
Guidance must be read with “Working Together
2013”
