Book and Website
• The book is just one of many resources used in the course – the book is not a guide to the class and the class will not be taught in the order that the book is layed out.
• Book Title: Geometry Integration Applications Connections • Publisher: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill • Price: $49.50
• Website: www.glencoe.com
Another Book We Will Use
• End of Course Workbook – • If you would like a copy in order to save writing, I will be placing a book order on January 6 my order th – • Each workbook will cost 10 dollars if ordered as part of • If ordered on your own it will be 23 dollars
Piloting Geometry without a book
• As an alternate to the previous ways we have taught geometry we will be teaching geometry in more cohesive units • This is done in an effort to put like concepts together to create a more homogeneous learning experience • This means that organization and keeping a neat and orderly binder are a MUST • With this in mind Binder checks will be done each and every Unit test
•
Course Overview
• gives students a visual way to environment
Course Overview
• provide students with visual and
• Study daily
Expectations
• Do homework and all assignments daily • Participate in class • Ask questions when needed • Come to tutorial if you need to • If you do these things then you will succeed in this class, if not then you will not have a successful experience • You will receive the grade you earn – NO EXCEPTIONS – I am not Santa Claus and Christmas only comes in December
Rules
• Come to class on time with all needed materials prepared to learn.
• Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking in class.
• Remain seated unless given permission to do otherwise.
• Absolutely no food is allowed in the classroom.
• Treat your teacher, your peers and yourself with respect.
• Tardy means not being in your seat when the bell rings.
Consequences
• Detention • Discipline Referral • Call to parents • Temporary move to another classroom • Loss of grade
TESTS and QUIZZES
• Tests will be given at the end of each unit with a midterm at the end of the 9 grade th week • Tests will make up 25@ of your • Quizzes will be given once or twice per week depending on the material presented • Quizzes will make up 15% of your grade
Grading Policy
• Tests • Quizzes • Homework • Projects • Classwork • Computer Lab 25% 15% 15% 15% 20% 10% • TOTAL 100% • This is 85% of your grade the rest of your • The EOCT makes up 15% of your grade
Supplies Needed
• 1 - 3 inch binder • 1 package of 12 dividers - numbered • 2 packages pencils • 3 packages notebook paper – 150 sheets • Calculator –TI-84 is highly recommended • Protractor • Ruler • Compass • 10 Page protectors
Cooperative Learning Groups
• The classroom will be arranged in small learning groups • This will be done so that during certain assignments you will be able to work together to help each other • The idea is that students can help each other to understand • Help each other to learn do not do the assignment for your group members
Headings on Papers
• Each student will be given a number to use on the heading of your papers.
• No names should appear on papers – ONLY your number • This will make it easier to grade and return papers.
Homework
• Homework is a very important part of the learning process for mathematics and provides an opportunity for reinforcement of skills taught in class. Students should expect homework DAILY.
• Math is not a spectator sport. One must practice what is taught in order to learn.
All Star Homework Club
• For as long as you get 100% on homework checked you stay on the wall and receive one free problem on each test • This will restart every 6 weeks • Begins with second test • Stay on the homework wall all semester and receive one bonus 100% test grade
Assignment Calendar
• An assignment calendar will be provided both on paper as well as online • This means that when a day is missed there will be no excuse for falling behind.
• If you miss a day, the class notes will be online in full as well so that nothing will be missed when you miss a day of school. • Make up work that is on worksheets will be located in folders and the assginment calendar will also be posted in the classroom • It is the student’s responsibility to pick up make up work and turn it in within the alloted time
Late Work
• Late work will not be accepted unless you are absent and have an excused absence • This only applies to classroom assignments missed • Assignments missed should be done since you have an assignment calendar and you have access to class notes online • Class notes should be obtained online or by asking a friend for the information. Do not ask me for the information, it is your responsibility to get the information when you miss a day of school • Projects are due on the day scheduled – no exceptions-
Extra Credit
– Extra credit will be given at different points during the semester through things like amnesty day and parent teacher conferences – Another way to receive extra credit will be by bringing in supplies when requested – Extra credit is not given just because you are lazy and do not do your work – Geometry requires you to do your work daily and to keep up with class assignments
Computer Lab
• Technology is an integral part of this • We will go to the computer lab regularly • This is not play time complete and turn in warned once, if a second
Geometer’s Sketchpad
• This will be the main program used in the computer lab • It allows you to use the computer to investigate and see the geometry concepts yourself • The program is fun and easy to use
Geometer’s Sketchpad
Examples of Sketchpad activities • Bubble • Tools from web
TI – 84 and 83 Calculators
• These calculators are a great investment and I strongly encourage you to buy one • We will be using them in class as another hands on tool to investigating the geometric ideas taught in class • A scientific calculator will be needed in class at the very minimum • A cell phone is not a calculator
Cabri Jr.
• This program can be loaded onto the TI calculators • We will be using this program on the calculators in class • I will provide some calculators • These calculators will be given out after proper collateral is given to ensure that the calculator doesn’t leave the room with you • Having your own TI 83 or 84 will be helpful Screen as viewed on a TI-84 Plus
Tutorial Hours
• Tuesday 3:15-4:00 • Thursday 3:15-4:00 • Mornings upon request • As another way to provide support I will be available for questions online for 1 hour each evening. I will try to do this from 8:00 9:00 each evening • In order to reach me online, use yahoo messanger I will be logged on as tbrooks2021- simply send me a message with your question and who you are and I will take the time to help you with your problems • You can leave messages even if I am not online and I will answer them once I log on.
END OF COURSE TEST
• This is a comprehensive test given to all Geometry students state wide • This will count as 15% of your final grade • We will spend several days reviewing prior to the test
Class Website
• There is a website for this class at http://www.classhomew

• Class notes, project information, extra credit opportunities and other important information will be posted here.
