HOW ST. PETERSBURG BEGAN
In 1703 the Russian
King, Tsar Peter the Great
founded St. Petersburg, a
city on the banks of the
Neva River.
Peter I decided to build a
new fortress on Hare Island.

Peter I called the
fortress after his
patron Saint Peter.
Afterwards our city
got this name.
Peter I ordered to
build a church on Hare
Island. It was named
Peter and Paul
Cathedral.
The architect
Domenico Trezzini
planned the cathedral
and it was finished in
1733.

Our city is situated on many islands. A lot of small
rivers and canals separate different parts of the city
from each other. That’s why there are a lot of nice
bridges in St. Petersburg.

From travels Peter

exotic things: models
of ships, rare books,
maps, globes.
The Kunstkammer
was opened in 1728.
THE SUMMER GARDENS
It is one of the most
poetic and interesting
places .
It began in May
1704 on Peter I’s
orders.
A lot of trees were
planted there: maples,
elms, oaks, fir trees.
The marble statues
were put along the
main alleys.

PALACE SQUARE
It is the centre of St.
Petersburg. Winter Palace a real
masterpiece of architecture was
built in 1754-1762 by
Bartolommeo Rastrelli.
It is the last and the most
perfect creation of the great
architect. For over 150 years the
palace was the residence of
Russian emperors.
Now it is one of five buildings
of the Hermitage one of the
largest and greatest museums in
the world. The museum was

ALEXANDER COLUMN
In the middle of Palace square
there is the Alexander Column. It is
a great monument to the Russian
victory over Napoleon. The column
is 25.58 metres high and 3.56 m in
diameter.
On the top of the column there is
a figure of an angel, a symbol of
victory of good over evil.

ST. ISAAC’S CATHEDRAL
This great building was created
by Auguste Montferrand. It took
him 40 years.
The cathedral was opened in
1858. 43 types of stone and marble
were used. The building is
decorated by about 400 sculptures,
paintings and mosaics.
The cathedral is 101,5 meters'
high and it weights 300000 tons.
Nowadays it is a living church.

ARTS SQUARE
The Arts Square ensemble was created in the first half
of the 19 century. It consists of the Mikhailovsky Palace
building with the square and the garden.
In the centre of Arts Square there is the monument to
Pushkin.

THE RUSSIAN MUSEUM
Mikhailovsky Palace
was designed by Carl
Rossi in 1819-1825 for
the Grand Duke
Mikhail, Paul I’s son.
Now in the palace
there is the State Russian
Museum. It has the
biggest collection of
Russian Art.
NEVSKY PROSPEKT
In 1719 Peter I ordered to build a road from the Admiralty
across Fontanka.
Now it is Nevsky Prospekt, the main street in St. Petersburg.
It has lots of monuments, bridges, beautiful buildings, shops,
restaurants and metro stations.

THE BRONZE HORSEMAN
The famous Bronze
Horseman, the monument to
Peter I, is one of the symbols of
St. Petersburg.
The monument was built by
French sculptor Etienne
Falconet on the order of
Catherine II.

There are more than 500

suburbs, 21 of them can be raised.
So ships can move on the Neva
River between the parts of the
bridges.
