HIS & e-Health developments in the (MOH)
Hospitals and Primary Care



The MOH allocated 4 Billion Saudi Riyals (1.1 billion USD) (20082011).
Save around 10-15 % of its annual health budget upon the
implementation of e-health.
There are 200 different (HIS) deployed separately, especially in the large
regional hospitals in Saudi Arabia, without being connected with each
other.

Saudi Arabia cooperated with:
 Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC 2005)
 United Nations Development Program (UNDP 2006)
 Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia ( ESCWA 2005)
E-Health and e-Government deployment In compliance with World Health
Organization-Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (WHO-EMRO).
Ministry of Health has recently launched a project with the aim of building
a centralized national Electronic Health Record (EHR) database.
(CITC 2005), (UNDP 2006), (ESCWA 2005) and (WHO-EMRO 2007)

HIS developments in (MODA) Medical
Services Division Hospitals

MODA successfully implemented a major HIS in 26 of its hospitals and
68 of its medical centers and clinics.

Aims to link all MSD hospitals under one unified medical system.

(HIS) from German company Nexus AG, (well known HIS provider to
over 600 hospitals around Europe.

(ERP) from a Swedish IFS company, include an infrastructure system,
database from Sun Microsystems and Oracle database.

18 sub-projects In 3 major phases spread across the six regions.

HIS development in the (NGHA)
Medical City

NGHA has adopted the Rhapsody™ Integration Engine as their standard
tool for integrating information systems.

Integration a key challenge!

Interfacing between information systems, including QuadraMed CPR
(HIS), Lumedx-Apollo and Philips CareVue.

Rhapsody is popular because interfacing in NGHA hands!

In the first half of 2008, plans extend the range of messages to include ADT,
electronic clinical orders, laboratory results and medication messaging.

Rhapsody allows health organizations pursue an ongoing program of I.T.
modernization

Capability of integration of new systems with legacy infrastructure.




Integrate technology and statistical methods from clinical information
systems (ICIS) realizing the importance of electronic health records.
On October 2002 Phase I completed and included:
 Enterprise Person Management
 Enterprise Scheduling Management
 Laboratory Information System
 Radiology Information system
 Computerized Physician Order Entry
 Nurse Documentation
In 2005, planning commenced for Phase II implementation and
completed by 2007 which included:
 Pharmacy IS
 Emergency Department IS
 Medical Records HIM
 Operating Room Information Systems IS

Under the umbrella of the NGHAA
Main Objectives:
 Knowledge in the field of health informatics.
 Update the knowledge of its members.
 Scientific consultation in health informatics.
 To advance scientific and vocational performance of the members.
 Exchange of experts locally and internationally
 Codes of Ethics and Practice.
 To better utilize the applications of health informatics in
therapeutic, research and e-learning.

In October 30th of the year 2007 a Memorandum Of
Understanding was signed with the Health Information Management
Systems Society (HIMSS) USA.
The purposes of the MOU are to:





Exchange knowledge, information and experience between both
parties in their fields.
Cooperate in building initiatives in the healthcare sector in places
of mutual interests.
Cooperate in conducting scientific and specialized workshops,
symposia, training and seminars.
Cooperate in executing projects of common interests
