What you can do to ‘Go Green and Get a Gold
Star!’
Did you know:
• Making paper from recycled material uses 60%
less energy than making virgin paper.
• If every household in the U.S. reused a paper
bag for one shopping trip, approximately 60,000
trees would be saved.
• Making cans from recycled aluminum saves 95%
of the energy required to produce cans from
virgin material.
• Approx. 75% of our trash can be recycled.
The College gets a Gold Star!
• Reduced energy
consumption by 35% over
the last 10 years.
• Installed geothermal wells in
our new Townhouses that
meet LEED certification
standards.
• We have the only
comprehensive management
of environmental, safety and
health system in all of
SUNY.
College Cont….
• We have recycled 40% of all domestic
refuse collected.
• Implemented a collaborative
Stormwater management plan in
cooperation with EHS, Earth Science,
Monroe County and NYSDEC
(produced a video “only rain down the
drain” that is used widely for training
purposes).
• Student powered program to use fryer
grease (from food service) to power
our diesel vehicles on campus
Reuse!
• Is it as simple as it sounds?
– Try to reuse products as much as possible.
• reuse water bottles by refilling instead of buying new
• carry along a reusable mug for coffee- this saves money
too!
– Buy used text books- this saves the cost of
reprinting and saves hundreds of sheets of paper
and therefore trees!
– Buy a canvas or mesh bag and use it when you go
shopping instead of using plastic bags.
Reduce!
• Consider the end life of the product you are using.
• Be a good consumer- buy products that limit the
packaging and are made from recycled materials.
• Purchase less.
• When in the dining halls, take only the food you can
eat, you can always go back for more but you cannot
give back food that you are unable to consume.
• Consume less.
Nothing reduces our recycling rates better
than less stuff TO recycle!
Recycling!
• Did you know that recycling one soda can saves enough
energy to power a television or computer for 3 hours!
• Recycle all your paper and cardboard- including pizza
boxes; just make sure it is free from pizza debris.
• Recycle your glassware - clear, brown and green are the
only three types of glass accepted for recycling.
• Recycle your plastics! Did you know that only number 1
and 2 plastics can be recycled? These consist of water
bottles, Gatorade containers, milk jugs, laundry and
dish detergent, and most shampoo and conditioner
bottles- buy recyclable plastics!
More on Recycling….
• Recycle your plastic bags at Wegman’s- don’t put the
bags in the garbage!
• Don’t throw out your old clothes! Brockport has a
Volunteers of America and a Salvation Army that
accepts clothing donations. Also, ECOS has clothing
and sneaker drives once a semester for your unwanted
clothes.
• Recycle your ink cartridges! There are collection boxes
set up all over campus- inquire at the information desk.
• Recycle your batteries. There are collection boxes set up
all over campus inquire at the information desk.

Recyclemania!
• Recyclemania was a 10-week competition among
colleges and universities across the US.
• During this campaign, the campus recycled
39,100 lbs of paper in February, more than
double last February (17,540 lbs!)
• That's 9,775 lbs a week, or 1 lb per person per
week recycled!

Paper Use at the College
• How much paper does the average College at
Brockport student use in a given semester?
• As of Sunday night, 3,965,873 pages have been
printed at the College since the fall semester.
• This equates to 7,931 reams or $22,841!
• Daily printing at the College averages 17,864
pages!
Energy Consumption
• Do you:
• Turn off the lights when leaving the room or
bathroom?
• Turn off your computer, monitor, cell phone,
etc.?
• Leave your car idling? Carpool?
These are a few ways to reduce your
ecological footprint.
Be a good consumer!
Try to buy only products that:
• Were produced locally,
• Can be recycled,
• Have the least amount of packaging,
• Look for the triangle with a # 1 or 2 for plastics,
• only clear, green and brown glass.
Everyone can make a difference
through small changes.
What you can do!
− turning off lights,
computers, and appliances
when not in use
− turning off the water when
brushing your teeth
