Men of Science/ Men of God:
Great Scientists Who Believed in the Bible

Short Bio of George Washington Carver
 Born as a slave in 1864 near Diamond Grove, Missouri, on the farm of Moses Carver
 There, he fell in love with nature, collected all manner of rocks and plants, and earned
the nickname, ‘The Plant Doctor’
 He began his formal education at the age of 12, which required him to leave the home
of his adopted parents
 At the age of 30, Carver was the first Black student accepted to Simpson College in
Indianola, Iowa.
 Later transferred to Iowa Agricultural College (now Iowa State University) where he
earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1894 and a Master of Science degree in
Bacterial Botany and Agriculture in 1896
 In 1897, Booker T. Washington, founder of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial
Institute for Negroes, convinced Carver to come south and serve as the school’s
Director of Agriculture. Carver remained on faculty until his death in 1943.
“All my life,” he said, “I have risen
regularly at four o’clock and have gone into
the woods and talked with God. There he
gives me my orders for the day. Alone there
with things I love most, I gather specimens
and study the great lessons Nature is so
eager to teach us all. When people are still
asleep, I hear God best and learn my plan.”
“Ask for

I carried the peanuts into my laboratory
and the Creator told me to take them apart
and resolve them into their elements.
Which such
knowledge as I
had of
chemistry and
physics I set to
work to take
them apart.
I separated the
water, the fats,
the oils, the
gums, the resins,
sugars starches,
pectoses,
pentosans, amino
acids.
There! I had the parts of the peanuts all
spread out before me.
The Creator said, “I have given
you three laws; namely,

take these constituents
them together, observing these
laws, and I will show you why I
made the peanut.”
I looked at
Him and He
looked at me.
“Why did you make
the peanut?”
I therefore went on to try different
combinations of the parts under different
conditions of temperature and pressure,
and the result was what you see.

George Washington Carver developed
over 300 products from the peanut
including:

Pancake flour
Shaving cream
Wall board
Insecticide
Gasoline
Cooking oil
Quinine
Charcoal
Rubbing oil
Rubber
Oleomargarine

As I worked on projects which fulfilled a real
human need, forces were working through me
which amazed me. I would often go to sleep
with an apparently insoluble problem. When I
awoke the answer was there. Why, then, should
we who believe in Christ be so surprised of what
God can do with a willing man and a laboratory.
The Farmers’ Institute
(Minutes from a meeting on May 27, 1904)
Opened with singing, “Father, I Stretch My
Hand to Thee.” There followed a Scripture
lesson, prayer, and other song, “Alas! And
Did My Savior Bleed.”
Then came a little talk on
“How and why we grow
cowpeas.”…

Outstanding Contribution to Southern
Agriculture with the following citation:
“To a scientist humbly
seeking the guidance
of God, and a liberator
to men of the white
race, as well as the
black.”
