CIVIC DUTIES AND CIVIC
RESPONSIBILITIES
SSCG 7, 8E
WHAT IS A CIVIC DUTY?
• Civic duties are the “musts” of
citizenship. This means that all
U.S. citizens are required by
law to perform these actions.
CIVIC DUTIES
• 1: Obeying the law: Our country only
works if everyone obeys the laws!
• 2: Attending School: All U.S. citizens
must go to school so that citizens have
the skills necessary to get jobs.
• 3. Paying Taxes: All citizens must pay
taxes because it gives our government
money to do things like pave roads,
pay for police, public housing, schools,
etc.
CIVIC DUTIES CONT.
• 4. Serving in the Armed Forces:
We have a duty to protect our
country.
• 5. Appearing in Court: If you are
called to serve jury duty or to
testify as a witness, you must do
so.
CIVIC RESPONSIBILITIES
• Civic responsibilities are the
“shoulds” of American citizens.
Though you are not required
by law to do them, most
Americans recognize their
importance.
CIVIC RESPONSIBILITIES
• 1: Voting: One of the most important
rights of U.S. citizens—they get to
choose who our leaders will be.
• 2: Being Informed: To make a good
decision when voting and to be
involved in government, it is important
to know about current events.
• 3. Taking Part in Government: Citizens
should be involved, whether they are
a member of government or voting for
it.

Important to take pride in your
community and get involved

Others’ Rights: You should
know what rights you have
and must defend human
rights.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A DUTY AND A
RESPONSIBILITY?
• Duties MUST be done and are
required by law.
• Responsibilities SHOULD be
done and are not required by
law, but are important.

members of government letting them
know what bothers you!

Help in your community and work to
improve it.
