Important Definitions

What is focus?
– When an image is clear
– Press the shutter release halfway down and hold it there while
focused on the subject to help select which part of a photograph
is in focus

What is composition?
– The arrangements of elements in a photograph

What is portrait orientation?
– Picture is taller than it is wide
– Helps minimize the background
– Turn the camera 90 degrees

What is landscape orientation?
– Picture is wider than it is tall
– When the camera is in its normal position

Photography Techniques

What is the rule of thirds?
– A 3x3 grid that places points of interest in the photograph
– The photographer imagines that the scene is split into three
parts horizontally and three parts vertically.


What is framing?
– Blocking some parts of a photograph to emphasize (or draw
attention to) another part of the same photograph
