The CHARACTER of the University

Dominican Institute/ University, Nigeria, admits: • academically qualified students • without discrimination as to religion, sex, nationality or ethnicity, • With respect for their freedom to hold and practice their religion.

Right: Moji Ladipo, Registrar of the University of Ibadan speaks at Graduation

The Institute/ University at the same time has a strong Catholic identity: ─ upholding Catholic moral values, and ─ making available the fullness of its rich doctrinal and philosophical tradition.

Catholic education is based on two premises: • The first is that faith and science, religion and secular thought are not antithetical, but autonomous and complementary.

• The second premise is the unity of the human family under God and the command to love all people.

The University’s courses critically canvass the world of ancient and contemporary learning for all that is TRUE, and also USEFUL in harnessing and managing Nigeria’s abundant human and natural resources for the development of the country today.

The University’s courses also promote the openness and dialogue between different religious and ethnic communities in view of Nigerian national integration.

Therefore, start a Dominican University!

• • • In continuity with the original mission of Dominicans to Nigeria to provide higher Catholic education for the laity, the Dominican Institute already does what universities do — research and teaching —this in keeping with the Order’s tradition since its inception in 1216.

The National Universities Commission has opted for private universities as the way both to improve quality and provide opportunity for the huge number of would-be students that the Government universities cannot admit. Contacts with the National Universities Commission have been most encouraging.

Numerous sectarian and Islamic private universities have been or are about to be established in Nigeria. These are a concern to Catholic parents who would prefer an educational environment more conducive to their children’s Faith.

Archbishop Felix Alaba Job

Archbishop of Ibadan ─ President of the Episcopal Conference of Nigeria

• With the establishment of the Dominican Institute over a decade ago, your Province has already started doing what Dominicans are noted for all over the world.

• You have my full support and backing for this Dominican University Project.

I ask God to bless you and fructify the Project as I assure you also of my continued prayers for its success.

From Francis Cardinal Arinze

• It is no surprise that the Dominican Province in Nigeria is planning to expand the Dominican Institute in Ibadan into a Dominican University.

• Nigeria needs universities inspired by the Catholic faith in order to give of the best that the Church can offer to Nigerian citizens. The Dominicans can help in this.

From Cardinal Okogie, of Lagos

• The Catholic Church has been recognized worldwide to be in the forefront of providing education at all levels. Consequently, we cannot be left out of the race to provide quality higher education to the teeming population of young Nigerians • It follows that the move by the Dominican Authorities in Nigeria to set up a university has my blessing.
