INTRODUCTION

   Newspapers are used for genealogical and biographical research and for community history .

They are for commercial, legal and personal results.

Irreplaceable documents which provide vivid accounts of local places, events and people.

 available elsewhere  They contain a mass of valuable information not Great deal of cultural knowledge is stored.

 It is not easily accessible, special clippings, archives were created.

 This is a case study on newspapers procured in JNU library .

DEFINITIONS

Preservation includes managerial & financial consideration including storage and accommodation provision, staffing and policy decision as well as the techniques and methods of maintaining materials in optimal conditions.

Maintaining library materials in conditions suitable for use, either in their original format or in a form more durable, through retention under proper environmental conditions.

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU UNIVERSITY

 JNU’s Central Library is a Knowledge Centre which has rich resources - in Social Sciences, Humanities and Sciences.  A depository of all Govt. publications and publications of some important International Organizations like WHO, European Union, United Nations and its allied agencies etc.  Recently established a Cyber Library with 200 computers.  Helen Keller Unit has been established for the special needs of the visually challenged students.

 Access to 4,500 full text e-journals from 25 publishers across the globe is available under the UGC-INFONET E-journals Consortium.  Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) can be accessed from all the Schools / Centers under University / Wide Area Network. NEWSPAPER CONFERENCE 4

COLLECTION DETAILS

 The Library has a total collection of 5.45 lakes - includes books, journals, serials, non-book materials etc.

 The faculty publications have been placed at the Ground Floor.

 The Library subscribes to 965 journals (in print) and also receives another 148 journals (in print) by way of gift and exchange.

COLLECTION OF NEWSPAPERS

 J N U acquires many newspapers in many foreign languages - more than 25 titles.  From various countries - Australia, China, France, German, - Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, UK, USA & Others.

- six titles are in Japanese - three titles of the USA and France respectively. - two titles in Urdu and Greece newspapers.  Mainly for preservation and for the use of scholars from School of Languages. 02/26/2010 NEWSPAPER CONFERENCE 6

 Newspaper issues or pages require conservation treatment in order to preserve them as intrinsic artifacts or for research or exhibition purpose.

 It depends on the characteristic of the individual item and its condition.

 Acidic newsprint requires often deacidification.

 Cellulose acetate lamination is not recommended for newsprint.

Preserving Newspaper Clippings

 Physical form is one method (Bound volumes)  Microfilming (another method) - advantages are:  Non-durability factor  Large unwiedly size  Huge storage space.

 First Newspaper to be microfilmed was “Lord of the Evening News” filmed in 1953.

 Newspapers are arranged in chronological manner.

 It is retrieved by researchers and scholars through the same way.

 All clippings are arranged in subject wise.

 Digitization of clippings provide the provision for researcher by browsing through the subject, name of the newspaper, date, etc.

NEWSPAPERS CLIPPINGS - DIGITIZATION

     JNU has 12.45 lacks paper clippings on different area studies and basic disciplines.

 Paper clippings are heart of research scholars and media persons.

 JNU library recently make paper clippings in form of electronic version.

They are arranged according to subject wise. Through the different browsing process it make available to each scholar in very user friendly manner.

Saves the time of the reader as per Dr S R.

Use of VIRTUA Software.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTROL

 It is an essential component of the success of any newspaper preservation program.

 Complete bibliographic information enables one to determine who holds a given title and  What issues are available or missing, any comments concerning supplements, editions, title changes, etc.

 Few libraries, historical societies and archives have been able to maintain bibliographic control.

CONCLUSION

 Many newspapers are in e-form now-a-days.

 The issue of completeness should concern anyone who use these.

 They do not include always the classified ads, legal and death notices and other local features.

 Many do not include photographs and advertising sections.

 Study shows – newspapers are acting as an important source for researchers and media personnel.
