Introduction
• Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) is a National Government
Department.
• Stats SA is mandated to collect, produce and disseminate official
statistics.
• It is accountable to the Minister of Finance.
• The activities of the department are regulated by the Statistics
Act.

Our role is to:
• Coordinate, collect, process, analyse and disseminate official
statistics;
• Develop the National Statistics System; and
• Inform organs of state, businesses, other organisations and the
general public on:
• Planning;
• Decision-making;
• Monitoring; and
• Assessment of policies

Census 2001
• Night of 9 October 2001.
• Enumerators were deployed to distribute questionnaires
throughout the country.
• About 100 000 individuals were employed.
• Aim to count every single person and household
